في الناس عدَّت مِن فُصول الفُضول

في الناس عدَّت مِن فُصول الفُضول

My praising one of base lineage is a disgrace to me,

Counted among people as a form of idle meddling.

كَخاضب الشَيب لتزيينه

كَخاضب الشَيب لتزيينه

يَسوّد الفرع وَتَأبى الأُصول

يَسوّد الفرع وَتَأبى الأُصول

Like one who dyes gray hair to adorn it:

He blackens the branch, but the roots refuse.
