My love is whole in affection, not frayed:

a love that foul suspicions cannot approach.

who turns my sīn into thāʾ whenever we converse.

I said, ‘Is the sword of your glance a guard for your cheek?’

He said, ‘And a bold warrior, striving to kill you.’

He said, ‘And would that allay your doubts?’

I told him, ‘Your love plants roots within my heart.’

He said, ‘Indeed, the hungry one harbors longing.’

I said, ‘I see myself wearing the robe of your estrangement.’

He said, ‘Yes; in that you shall remain.’

I said, ‘May my soul ransom you! My complexion has yellowed.’

He told me, ‘Go; I am your heir.’

And, willingly submitting to him, I bowed my head.

He said coyly, ‘You are a breaker of pledges.’

I said, ‘I do not haggle over selling my soul.’

He said, ‘In my estrangement you shall doubtless remain.’

I said, ‘My path to union with you is effaced.’

He said, ‘And no deflowerer approaches one like me.’

I said, ‘Why do you kick the love-stricken?’

He said, ‘He wished to be lewd with me.’

I said, ‘I can only guess at tenderness—

O bough, bend kindly!’ He said, ‘That will not happen.’

toward one in misery?’ He said, ‘Here I am, rending him.’

my heart's essence with tears?’ He said, ‘And crush it too.’

He said, ‘That I am digging a grave for the likes of you.’

I said, ‘I see him scheming behind my back.’

He said, ‘Are you mixing jest with earnest?’

He turned away from me, recoiling, while his coquetry

    teased me—and coquetry awakens longing.

O gazelle, gently! Your gaze bewitches,

and breathes magic into the knots of minds.

My life be your ransom, if only you would grant a glance!

Can I live, my love, with the anguish you inflict?

The talebearers have maligned me to you, claiming that I—

dubious though their words are—besmirch your honor,

and that whoever loves you, if passion breaks him,

surely digs for his own death with his hoof.

O light beside the two luminaries, when you appear,

those who profess God's oneness declare you a third.

And if the censurers dispute what I have claimed,

by my father's life, I shall debate it.

I swear by your essence, of which

the east-wind breeze has spoken tenderly—and I break no oath:

you indeed, though the meeting-place be distant, in my heart

abide, though great calamities befall me.
