Like a young antelope—exalted is He who fashioned him—
Like roots uncovered he appeared,
Radiant of countenance.
With a radiant smile.

He outshone the moons when he emerged,
My full moon—and greeted me.
My full moon and life.

He who shames the boughs with his sway
He puts the branches to shame as he sways,
Has turned away from me.
He has leaned away from me,

And the tears of my eye, like a torrent,
And tears from my eyes flow like a stream,
Pour forth from me.
Pouring down from me.

My body grew frail and woe is me,
Is enough for me; and indeed I
Enough! I swear by me

I have not come, by God I swear,
Anything outrageous.
With anything flimsy.

How my innards were shaken, oh to the cupbearer!

And my sipping of his sweet saliva
Was a draught of potent wine.
Sipping the fever.

Oh bearers of spirits, how sweet
The wine of youthful dalliance!

The tavern revealed to me
And my heart is yearning.
While my heart is sober.

I do not complain of a wide, lovely eye
I do not complain of a beauty’s disdain,
That sought my torment.
Though it tortured me.

All who complain of love are shunned,
With long-lasting estrangement.
Shunned completely.

Since the veil's guardian disappeared,
The morning sun.
Dawn’s sun rose.

How can nearness not be sweet
The bitterness of my disgrace?

And show kindness, for merit disdained
