حافظ عَلى العَهد يا خَليلي
بَينَbetween; amid الأَخلّاءِbrotherhood; fraternal affection وَالأَحِبَّهand those who are loved; dear ones
بَينَ الأَخلّاءِ وَالأَحِبَّه
Keep faith with the covenant, O my dear friend,
amid brotherhood and those we love.
وَكُنand be; remain عَلىthrough; whether in البُعدdistance or separation وَالتَدانيand nearness or drawing close
وَكُن عَلى البُعد وَالتَداني
مُتّصلcontinuous and unbroken; steadfastly bound الودّaffection وَالمَحبَّهand love
مُتّصل الودّ وَالمَحبَّه
Whether far apart or drawing near, remain
bound by unbroken affection and love.
فَحبَّةٌfor my seed or grain, in a metaphor of multiplying love مِنfrom; born of وِدادaffection or loving attachment خلٍّmy dear, intimate friend
فَحبَّةٌ مِن وِداد خلٍّ
تَنبتsprouts; grows فيin; within القَلبthe heart أَلفa thousand حَبَّهseeds or grains
تَنبت في القَلب أَلف حَبَّه
For my seed, born of my dear friend’s affection,
sprouts a thousand seeds within the heart.
