Joys were ushered in bridal procession to the full moon of eminence.

And gladness appeared, so sorrows vanished.

Rise, then, to the spacious garden, for there have appeared

The blossoms of the hills, and spirits have brightened through them.

And do you not see the tale-bearing herb, whose secret is divulged

By the breeze’s scent and its pervasive fragrance?

And myrtle resembles cheek-down; enough for us

Instead of its blossoms is refreshment in its shade.

And the eyes of wild-ox calves seem to be narcissi,

And the mouths of slender beauties, daisies.

And the anemone’s cheek, touched by rain, seems

A ruby, and that ruby seems a lamp.

And jasmine blossoms just before dawn seem

The bright stars with which daybreak glowed.

And the yellow among its stock blossoms seems

A wasted sufferer whom love’s anguish has harmed.

And a ben-tree bough among the branches of the hills seems

A full-hipped maiden whom coquetry makes sway.

Beauty wove for her garments of fine silk,

So a sash complained of its loose sway above the dune.

The east wind bent her curves, as though she were

Slender-waisted women whose sides wine had bent.

It is as though the east wind were infatuated with her,

So it has its morning coming and evening going among them.

And on the arak trees, the doves of the protected grove seem

Singing girls whose lute tuning has made eloquent.

And our evening companion among the narcissi is a warbler,

Heartsick—a loud-voiced nightingale is all you need.

Joy stormed the gardens, and there appeared to me

A struggle between the thickets and the breeze.

And dawn had routed darkness, beaming,

Until its radiant brow was lit.

And thunder had assailed the torrents, so there were unsheathed

For lightning, broad blades from the clouds’ scabbard.

The lightning of its clouds kept smiling

Until its copious tears streamed forth.

Rejoice at the dancing boughs, for only

Morning unveils the morning draught of aged wine.

And in longing for maidens and cheek-down,

Cast off your bridle; no blame rests on you.

Do you see the eyes of slender beauties, from whose pupils

Cups have circulated among the people of reason?

Drink, then—may I be your ransom, my drinking companion—and pass me

Wine in which our souls find ease.

From the hand of a singing fawn who stole reason

With his beauty; love of oryxes betrays its lovers.

    وَرضابه كَأس الطِلا وَالراحُ

    He sang, and his throat spared us the need for wine;

And his sweet saliva is the wine-cup and the wine.

O comfort of souls, be gentle with me, for from

The lovers of your beauty, souls have departed.

Indeed I say to a hater who has reproached me:

Leave me and my affairs alone: jesting is banished.

    حُكم الغَرام تَمنّع وَسماحُ

    Do not let this coy refusal entice you in love;

Passion’s rule is refusal and consent.

How can there be release, when glances are sharp swords?

And how escape, when slender forms are spears?

I have no choice but to set down my saddlebags in a court

That brings the seeker happiness and success.

At the gate of a lord of Banu al-Yafi—those

In whose court we sought refuge, and prosperity dawned.

Each of them a succorer, a refuge in calamity,

Or each a life-giving rain wherever generosity is reckoned.

A people whose guide stood at the gate of the Truth,

For the arrival of those who beheld the vast expanse and roamed.

They pour a vintage of the wine of witnessing,

By which spirits and bodies have been enraptured.

Shall we not sell our souls in love of them,

When thereby our gains are multiplied?

My lord, enough for you, O namesake of Muhammad,

Is honor through your grandfather, whose light shines bright.

Tell those who denied his eminence and merit,

And concealed and disclosed plots against him:

Will he not attain victory, when he is its father,

And through him the affairs of humankind are set right?

It harms no lion of the forest, in its thickets,

That barking from dogs should grow insolent.

Though time has indeed granted them their wishes,

Winds will surely scatter what they have built.

O friend, if their dark calamities overwhelm you,

And their unruliness persists among humankind,

Enter his sanctuary, perfuming with his praise

Our souls, as spirits give off fragrance.

He is discerning: when the affairs of the wise fall into disorder,

They are set right by his penetrating judgment.

Through him the heights of lofty glory rise, just as

Praise rises with the dignity of his station.

O you, whenever the openings of joy are bolted shut,

In your hands lies a key to their lock:

Heal hearts—may you be protected from mortal maladies—

For their wounds may well heal.

Leave worries aside: whatever fate has already ordained

By its decree is, without doubt, destined.

    إِنّ اِغتِنام صَفا السُرور مُباحُ

    Enjoy your gladness and seize the chances for happiness;

To seize the purity of joy is permitted.

The sun of the bridal chamber has come to you, O full moon of eminence,

And a lamp has lit the niche of happiness.

Enjoy a blissful morning; its morning draught has greeted you,

It was unveiled, and its fragrant breeze arose.

I shall surely spread congratulations at your gate,

And go forth robed in happiness, and so find ease.

And I say: O breezes of Unsi, record the date:

Joys were ushered in bridal procession to the full moon of eminence.
