إِذا حُزت مَجداً شامِخاً فَاِتّخذ لَهُ

إِذا حُزت مَجداً شامِخاً فَاِتّخذ لَهُ

مِن الشيم الحَسناء أَسنى المَراتبِ

مِن الشيم الحَسناء أَسنى المَراتبِ

If you attain lofty glory, then choose for it

If you gain lofty glory, take for it

the highest ranks of noble character.

The finest attributes of noble character.

فَما المَجد إِلّا تاج عزٍّ وَإِنَّما

فَما المَجد إِلّا تاج عزٍّ وَإِنَّما

جَواهره ما في الفَتى مِن مَناقِبِ

جَواهره ما في الفَتى مِن مَناقِبِ

For glory is but a crown of honor, and indeed,

For glory is but a crown of might; its gems

its jewels are only the virtues within a young man.

Are virtues found within the man himself.

لِكُلّ على أَهل فَإِن تعطَ غَيرَهم

لِكُلّ على أَهل فَإِن تعطَ غَيرَهم

فَتِلكَ مِن الأَيّام ضَربة لازِبِ

فَتِلكَ مِن الأَيّام ضَربة لازِبِ

Every high honor has those worthy of it; if it is granted to others,

Bestow upon each man what is his due -

then that is an inescapable blow from the days.

Else you invite misfortune's deadly blow.
