إِذا قرن المَليح إِلى قَبيح

إِذا قرن المَليح إِلى قَبيح

فَذَلِكَ في المَذاق أَجلّ شُنعه

فَذَلِكَ في المَذاق أَجلّ شُنعه

If the beautiful is paired with something ugly,

When the beautiful is paired with the ugly,

Then that is the greatest affront to taste;

That is the utmost repulsion to the taste.

وَإِن زَعَموا بِهِ نَوعاً بَديعاً

وَإِن زَعَموا بِهِ نَوعاً بَديعاً

فَعِندي أن ذَلِكَ شرُّ بدعَه

فَعِندي أن ذَلِكَ شرُّ بدعَه

And even if they claim it is a wondrous form,

Though they claim it a wondrous creation,

Then, to my mind, that is the worst innovation.

To me it is the worst innovation.
