بليتI was afflicted بِأَزرقwith one blue in العَينينboth eyes أَحوىdark-hued
حَوىpossessed رقّيmy bondage فَعنّفنيso he rebuked me العذولُthe reproacher
I was afflicted with a blue-eyed, dark-hued beloved;
I am smitten with eyes of blue, the longing is sweet agony
He held me in thrall, and the reproacher rebuked me.
My gentleness he reprimanded, the critic was harsh with me
وَقالand he said أرىI see بزرقin the blueness of العَينthe eye شُؤماan ill omen
فَقُلتso I said لَهُto him أَبنmake clear ليto me ماwhat الدَليلُthe proof
And said, "I see an ill omen in blue eyes."
He said, "In eyes of blue I see ill fate."
I said to him, "Explain to me: what is the proof?"
I said, "State your proof to me."
فَقالso he said دَليلهits proof قَدindeed صحّhas proved true عِنديin my judgment
بِأَنّكin that you فيin مَحبّتهlove for him قَتيلُslain
He said, "Its proof is clear to me:
He said, "My proof is firm in my view
For you are slain by your love for him."
For in loving him you will a martyr be."
فَقُلتso I said أَلاdo you not تَرىsee أَنّيthat I am شَهيدa martyr
وَليand mine is فَضلthe honor of الشَهادةmartyrdom ياO جَهولُignorant one
I said, "Do you not see that I am a martyr?
I said, "Do you not see I'm already a martyr,
And mine is the honor of martyrdom, you ignorant fool!
And martyrdom's honor is mine, O ignorant fool!"
وَهاand here أَناI am فيin جِنانthe gardens of الخَدِّthe cheek مِنهُof him
أُنعَّمُI am granted bliss وَهيَand they are ليfor me ظلٌّa shade ظَليلُsheltering
And here I am in the gardens of his cheek,
I'm blessed, his shade shelters me
Granted bliss, and they are a sheltering shade for me.
So die of rage and spite, my critic
فَمُتso die ياO عاذِليmy reproacher كَمداًof grief وَغَيظاًand rage
فَلَيسَfor there is no لِمثلfor one such as مَنthe one whom أَهوىI love مَثيلُequal
So die of grief and rage, O my reproacher,
For none can equal he whom I adore
For the one I love has no equal."
