لاحَappeared العذارthe cheek-down فَخلتso I thought لَيلَةthe night of قَدرِهِhis decree
لاحَ العذار فَخلت لَيلَة قَدرِهِ
تَجلوunveils بِنورwith the light of الفَضلgrace طَلعَةَthe face of بَدرِهِhis full moon
تَجلو بِنور الفَضل طَلعَةَ بَدرِهِ
His cheek-down appeared, and I thought his Night of Power
The full moon of his beauty shone, and the night of destiny arrived,
Was unveiling his full-moon face with the light of grace.
Its rising illuminating with the light of excellence and favor.
أَعطىgave الإِلَهGod لِيوسفto Joseph شَطرhalf of البَهاbeauty
أَعطى الإِلَه لِيوسف شَطر البَها
وَحَباand bestowed سَليمSalim الودّaffection مِنهُof it بِشَطرهِwith its half
وَحَبا سَليم الودّ مِنهُ بِشَطرهِ
God gave Joseph half of beauty,
God gave Joseph half the beauty,
And bestowed half of it on Salim, true in affection.
And the other half, the perfection of affection in good faith.
لِلّهto God (expressing admiration) نَجلa scion of أَكارمnoble men بلَغواthey reached السُهاal-Suhā (a star)
لِلّه نَجل أَكارم بلَغوا السُها
بِكَمالهمthrough their perfection لَمdid not يَرغَبواthey turn away عَنfrom أَمرِهِHis command
بِكَمالهم لَم يَرغَبوا عَن أَمرِهِ
How wondrous the scion of noble men who reached al-Suhā
God has noble sons who have attained the peak,
Through their perfection; they did not turn away from His command.
Through their perfection, never turning from His command.
كَملتbecame complete مَحاسنهhis charms بِعَينin the eye of مُحبّهhis lover
كَملت مَحاسنه بِعَين مُحبّه
وَبَداand appeared العذارthe cheek-down فَكانَso it became آيةa sign of عذرِهِhis excuse
وَبَدا العذار فَكانَ آية عذرِهِ
His charms became complete in his lover’s eye,
His virtues were made perfect in the eye of his lover,
And the cheek-down appeared, becoming the sign of his excuse.
And his beauty appeared, becoming a sign of his excuse.
آياتverses of حُسنbeauty فيin بَديعwondrous صِفاتِهِhis qualities
آيات حُسن في بَديع صِفاتِهِ
نَزلتdescended فَأَرّخهاso it recorded their date العذارthe cheek-down بسطرِهِwith its line
نَزلت فَأَرّخها العذار بسطرِهِ
Verses of beauty in his wondrous qualities
Signs of beauty in the elegant composition of his qualities,
Descended, and the cheek-down recorded their date with its line.
Descended, which the full moon dated with its line.
