صُنguard ماءَlustre (honor) وَجهكyour face تَبتَهجyou will delight بِجَمالِهِin its beauty
وَاِستجدِand seek bounty from مَنthe One who عمَّencompassed الوَرىall creation بِنَوالِهِwith his bounty
Guard your face’s lustre; you will delight in its beauty.
Guard the water of your face, it shines with its beauty,
And seek bounty from the One whose gifts embrace all creation.
And seek from the one who has given plenty to the world with his bounty,
فَوَحقِّfor, by the sacred right of فَخرthe pride of الكائِناتall beings وَآلِهِand his family
ماnot اِعتاضَgained in return باذلone who sacrifices وَجهِهِhis face (honor) بِسؤالِهِthrough his begging
For, by the sacred right of creation’s pride and his family,
For by the truth of the pride of creation and his family,
one who sacrifices his face’s honor by begging gains no
No one insisted on asking him, though his face was accessible.
عِوضاًrecompense وَلوand even if نالhe attained الغِنىwealth بِسؤالِthrough begging
فاِقنعso be content بماwith what منof رزقthe provision of ربّكyour Lord نِلتهُyou received it
recompense, even if he attains wealth through begging.
Instead, even if he attained riches by asking,
So be content with what you have received of your Lord’s provision.
So be content with what your Lord has provided you,
وَدَعِand leave off السؤالbegging فَخابfor he has failed منthe one whom أَمَّلتهُyou placed your hopes in him
فَلَئنfor if indeed خَلَعتyou cast off كساthe garb of الحَياءmodesty عَدمتهyou will lose it
And leave off begging, for the one you pinned your hopes on has failed you.
And leave off begging for whoever hopes in it is disappointed,
For if you cast off modesty’s garb, you will lose it.
For if you cast off the garment of shame you will lose it,
وَإِذاand when السؤالbegging مَعwith النَوالthe bounty وَزنتهُyou weigh it
رجحَweighs heavier السؤالbegging وَخفَّand weighs light كلّevery نوالِgift
And when you weigh begging against the bounty,
And if you weigh asking with bounty,
begging weighs heavier, and every gift weighs light.
Asking outweighs, and every bounty becomes lighter.
