جرَّ الهَوى عَقلي لِخَلع العذار
When the down on Badr al-Din’s cheek appeared,
When Badr al-Din’s cheek-down appeared,
love stripped my reason bare, casting off all restraint.
Passion drew my mind to casting off the bridle.

O Badr, if asked what drew it forth, reply,
O Badr, if asked, “By what was it drawn?” say,
marking its date: “It was drawn by the lām of al-ʿidhār.”
Giving its date: “It was drawn by the lām in al-ʿidhār.”
