    وَجَوىً تُباع بِهِ النُفوس وَتُشتَرى

    A grief whose full extent bewilders all mankind,

    And a heartache through which souls are sold and bought;

    وَجفاً يُفرّق بَينَ جَفني وَالكَرى

    And a love that binds my body to wasting sickness,

    And estrangement that parts my eyelid from sleep;

    وَعَناً بِهِ جلدُ المُحبّ قَد اِنبَرى

    And a sorrow that baffles the healers, men of reason,

    And suffering that has worn the lover’s endurance away;

    مِن مَدمَعٍ إِلّا هَمى وَتَحدَّرا

    And a yearning that has spared in me no last drop

    Of tears: each has poured forth and streamed down;

    وَبِهِ تكلُّ السارِيات عَن السرى

    And a wasting sickness beneath whose burden steadfast mountains crumble,

    And beneath which night-travelers grow too weary to journey;

    And a longing that never ends—and even if it ended,

    I would perish in grief for it, consumed with regret.

    Take from me the account of passionate love, for

    This tale could never be fabricated for you.

    أَحوى حوى كُلَّ المَحاسن أَحوَرا

    I love the beautiful, and every one of deep-dark eyes,

    Dark-lipped, possessing every charm, with eyes of brilliant white and black;

    يَرعى الحَشاشة آمناً مُستَنفرا

    And a gazelle of the herd whose covert lies in my heart,

    Grazing on my very life, secure yet skittish;

    روميُّ شعرٍ قَد تضمَّخ عَنبَرا

    Arabian in speech, Babylonian in glances,

    Roman in hair, richly scented with ambergris;

    His charms are plain, his hips so heavy they have

    Tugged at his flanks, so he sways with a swagger.

    If he rises, his hips chant to his flank:

    “Bow your head, O curlew: the ostrich is in the villages!”
