Excellence has deserted the house of poetry; whoever becomes
The grace departed from Quraysh's abode, so he who tomorrow
devoted to it—ah, how often he has spent the night a captive!
Seeks it there, has long been seeking in vain,
تَقطّعتِhave been severed الأَسبابthe ties مِنهُfrom him وَأَصبَحَتand became

The ties to him have been severed, and now
The means to it are severed, and for it
the tongues of vile reproach have become his rhymes.
Accusing tongues have made their calumnies the rhymes.
