No sooner did the full moon of lofty honors set out aboard the ships

Than the world's globe became, through him, a celestial sphere.

O star that journeyed southward by night, away from my sight,

If I utter 'Ah,' it is for me; if praise, it is for you.

Take whatever you wish, but leave me patience, for you have

Stirred up a battle between separation and my heart.

O you who possess the finest of all noble qualities,

Be foremost among your companions, for God has favored you.

You trod the paths of guidance, O Abid al-Rahman,

And were a guiding lamp for whoever trod them.

You journeyed by night like the full moon among the stars; they did not

Know whether you were a king or an angel.

So leap upon the backs of the heights, in glory and honor,

And let whoever lies be turned away from the reach of your eminence.

And buy necklaces of praise as an adornment for glory,

From noble deeds; I guarantee you against loss.

How admirable you are—a gallant man whose gallantry

Surpassed all with a light of wit that Dhuka, the sun, never attained.

And a lord whose renown breathed musk, then grew

And spread its fragrance, till the east wind recounted and told of him.

You were girded with a keen sword of resolve: if you struck with it

A peak among the lofty, firmly rooted mountains, it would split apart.

And with an awe from God's majesty: were it unveiled

One day upon the revolving sphere, the sphere would not stir.

O you who set between my heart and suffering veils

Of fortitude—behold, my tears have rent them.

My eye has tasted slumber only to make it

A snare for your dream-phantom, at love's command.

Welcome to one who has always been worthy of all praise,

And welcome to you, with the greetings of joy.

O sun of excellence, through whom Beirut has boasted

Above the sky that showed us its woven paths.

Were it not for your glad tidings, in which she rejoiced,

Her night, O full moon, would have remained pitch-dark for an age.

And had there been no one to solve the tangled matter

For her people, time would have gone on in confusion.

Hail to you, arriving traveler who revived hearts, and so did not

Leave anyone stung by grief, nor let any remain so.

You have attained your wishes; may you never cease to attain them,

Through the bounty of the most generous of givers and rulers.

Take a delightful share of your joy, and leave

My share to me; never suppose it is not shared.

All the family lamented your absence from home,

And you were still more eloquent in lamenting this separation.

And you have risen over us with joy, a moon

Whose radiance has rent the veils of sorrow.

O best of those who made pilgrimage or visited the noblest one,

With whom lies hope's rope: none who grasped it was disappointed.

I composed a chronogram: return, winning happiness through your return—

May God accept from you the pilgrimage and the rites.
