Be patient—what good, otherwise, does sorrow do?
The noble man is tested by bearing oppression.

Those like us, and the great before us, were struck by calamity;
yet they neither yielded to what they faced nor grew weak.

And entrust the matter to the All-Merciful, relying on Him,
for every matter is bound to God's command.

is worthy of every hope we place in His bounty.

that you will find, for hardship is joined to twofold ease.

How many a night of calamity has its dawn dispelled, bringing relief,
though the caravan's passage through it had been rough.

Indeed, though this world's calamities be many,
time here never remains in a single state.

None hears reproach but one who has an ear.

Within the soul are sorrow-born stirrings of grief
that neither soul nor body can bear.

A calamity about which I addressed men of sound judgment,
in a setting where even the silver-tongued orator falters.

I complain to God of people who have adopted
a balance of injustice on which they weighed their judgments.

as though they were safe from the reversals of Time.

In their baseness, they clothed themselves in forbearance's garb;
thus their forbearance is complete, and their baseness concealed.

is like a stallion grown bold, with no halter to lead it.
