مُستَقرّاًas a dwelling ديارناour homes وَمَقيلاand a noonday resting place
I said one day to a visitor whose presence made
our homes a wretched dwelling and noonday resting place:
لَوif عَلمناwe had known بِذاof this القُدومarrival رَحلناwe would have left
قَبلbefore أَنthat تَبتَغيseek النُفوسthe souls رَحيلاdeparture
“Had we known of this arrival, we would have left
before our souls sought to depart.
فيكَin you شَيءٌsomething مِنof العَجائبwonders أَضحىhas come to be
ماnot أَراناhas shown us لَهُfor it الزَمانtime مَثيلاa likeness
In you a wondrous thing has come to be,
whose like time has never shown us:
خفّةٌlightness مَعwith ثقالةٍheaviness أَيُّwhat شَيءthing
فيat أَوانa time يُرىis seen خَفيفاًlight ثَقيلاheavy
lightness joined with heaviness—what thing
is seen at once as light and heavy?”
