رِد الجَدول الصافي الَّذي ضَمّ أَبحرا

رِد الجَدول الصافي الَّذي ضَمّ أَبحرا

تَجد بَحر علم مِنهُ ضمّ جَداولا

تَجد بَحر علم مِنهُ ضمّ جَداولا

Come to the clear stream that has embraced seas;

Return the clear table that contained seas,

You will find a sea of knowledge from which it has gathered streams.

You will find in it a sea of knowledge that gathered tables.

وَخُض لجّهُ وَاِستجلِ كُلّ فَريدةٍ

وَخُض لجّهُ وَاِستجلِ كُلّ فَريدةٍ

تحلّى بِها في الناس مَن كانَ عاطِلا

تحلّى بِها في الناس مَن كانَ عاطِلا

And plunge into its depths, and uncover every precious pearl

Dive into its deep and derive every unique pearl,

With which one once unadorned has adorned himself among people.

With which he who was idle adorned himself among people.

فَذاكَ هُوَ العَذب الفُراتُ الَّذي صَفا

فَذاكَ هُوَ العَذب الفُراتُ الَّذي صَفا

وَأمَّت بِهِ ظَمأى العُقول مَناهِلا

وَأمَّت بِهِ ظَمأى العُقول مَناهِلا

For that is the sweet, refreshing water that has become clear,

That is the sweet Euphrates that became clear,

And through it thirsty minds have sought watering places.

And with it the thirst of intellects was quenched from springs.

وَما رَقَّ حَتّى راقَ وِرداً وَمَصدرا

وَما رَقَّ حَتّى راقَ وِرداً وَمَصدرا

وَحَيّا فَأَحيا شَمألاً وَشَمائِلا

وَحَيّا فَأَحيا شَمألاً وَشَمائِلا

Nor did it grow gentle until it delighted, in approach and departure,

It did not flow until it flowed as a meadow and a source,

And it greeted, then revived a north wind and noble traits.

And it revived the withered and the flexibilities.

كِتاب رَوى علم الخَليل بن أَحمَدٍ

كِتاب رَوى علم الخَليل بن أَحمَدٍ

فَأَحرَز مِنّا وافر الحَمد كامِلا

فَأَحرَز مِنّا وافر الحَمد كامِلا

A book that transmitted the knowledge of al-Khalil ibn Ahmad,

A book that narrated the knowledge of Al-Khalil bin Ahmad,

So it earned from us abundant praise in full.

So it earned from us abundant perfect praise.

وَسفرٌ عَن الإِسعاف أَسفَر مُسعداً

وَسفرٌ عَن الإِسعاف أَسفَر مُسعداً

فَكانَ بِهِ التَحصيل لِلفَضل حاصِلا

فَكانَ بِهِ التَحصيل لِلفَضل حاصِلا

And a volume that revealed aid, bringing gladness,

And a journey on benefaction that prospered happily,

So through it the attainment of excellence was achieved.

So through it collecting virtue was achieved.

وَأَعرَب عَن تَأليف أَبرَع كاتِبٍ

وَأَعرَب عَن تَأليف أَبرَع كاتِبٍ

فَأَغرَب حَتّى صَيَّر العَقل ذاهِلا

فَأَغرَب حَتّى صَيَّر العَقل ذاهِلا

And it revealed the work of the most accomplished writer,

And he expressed on behalf of a most eloquent author,

So extraordinary was it that it left the mind bewildered.

So he astonished until he made the mind lost.

حَبا العَزمُ ذيّاك المُؤلّف همّةً

حَبا العَزمُ ذيّاك المُؤلّف همّةً

يَزيد بِها في الناس حَزماً وَنائِلا

يَزيد بِها في الناس حَزماً وَنائِلا

Resolve endowed that author with high aspiration,

Determination loved that composer of works,

Through which he grows among people in prudence and bounty.

To increase through it among people firmness and attainment.

فَلَيسَ يُقاس القسُّ جرجس بِالسوى

فَلَيسَ يُقاس القسُّ جرجس بِالسوى

وَهَل مُشبه قسُّ الفَصاحة باقِلا

وَهَل مُشبه قسُّ الفَصاحة باقِلا

For the priest Jirjis is not to be compared with others,

So the bow is not to be compared to the equivalent,

And does the Quss of eloquence resemble Baqil?

And can the bow of eloquence be compared to the lowly?

عَرَفنا لَهُ حَقّاً يُراعى وَإِنَّما

عَرَفنا لَهُ حَقّاً يُراعى وَإِنَّما

بِهِ يَتَمارى مَن يَرى الحَقَّ باطِلا

بِهِ يَتَمارى مَن يَرى الحَقَّ باطِلا

We have acknowledged his due, which must be honored; only

We knew about him a right that must be heeded;

One who sees truth as false disputes it.

With it contends whoever sees right as wrong.

جَزاهُ إله العَرش خَيراً فَقَد عَلَت

جَزاهُ إله العَرش خَيراً فَقَد عَلَت

مَساعيهِ في ما يَجعَل الخَير شامِلا

مَساعيهِ في ما يَجعَل الخَير شامِلا

May the God of the Throne reward him with good, for high have risen

May the God of the Throne reward him with goodness, for

His endeavors in what makes goodness all-embracing.

His efforts have excelled in making good all-encompassing.
