The remembrance of old haunts and standing upon al-Safa

Took pledges of sincerity from hearts.

How glorious the days at al-Muhassab and al-Naqa,

And the time of union with loved ones, so serene!

May rain greet those ruined camps, for how often

Their breezes revived a sick man, wasted away.

How many a spring abode among al-Liwa's ban trees

The heart forever yearns for with aching longing!

And my beloved beneath the arak tree's shade remains

    A flirtatious lover, or a long-lashed gazelle.

And indeed I say to him—when darkness has veiled

The watcher's eye—with humility and tenderness:

O you lodging at Khayf al-Muhassab in Mina,

I feel secure, no longer fearing for you.

    فَوَشى بِهِ دَمعي وَقَد بَرح الخَفا

    I hid your secret in my breast from my slanderers;

But my tears betrayed it, and concealment was gone.

O bough, why do you not bend to love,

While your figure is still so slender?

    O supple-limbed one, love's anguish has overcome

The lover's fortitude; bestow your tenderness upon him.

    إِنّ العَليل مِن التلاف عَلى شَفا

    And heal the sick man, saving him with a little solace;

For the sick man stands on the brink of death.

O full moon of beauty, revealed in perfection,

Have mercy on a grieving man, vanished in the moon's dark phase.

If you seek estrangement, O gazelle of al-Sarim,

Then remember the pledges between us, never to be broken.

Or if I have sinned, generously pardon

What I have done, for my patience has worn away.

Grant me safety, for the spear of your stature remains

Sharp-pointed, and the sword of your glance keen-edged.

And pity a captive in your right hand, whose heart

Obeys your left whenever you wish to command.

And grant your servant, if you wish, a glance,

If, my master, you wish me to be honored.

I swear by your beauty mark, your lips, and their dusky tint,

And by your firm pledge, affection, and fidelity:

My heart has never strayed from love of you to cherish

Anyone besides you—save the namesake of the Chosen One:

The peerless luminary who, in our land,

Was never unknown, that he should need to make himself known.

A noble man who, for all his honor, possesses

A nature finer and gentler than the breeze.

And gains from him rare delights and refinement.

And toward him, companion and gatherings alike are ever

Drawn, each with longing and eager anticipation.

Until God indeed bestowed him upon

These lands, in generosity and compassion.

He appeared like the full moon in the blackness of night,

Among the stars, shining and exalted.

Welcome to him for whom our dwellings danced

In rapture, like one who has sipped potent wine.

And spacious was the lodging; how many eyes

Were gladdened, and companions gathered in joy!

O you whose qualities, whenever I seek to describe them,

The tongue falls short and cannot do you justice.

    منَّ الإِلَه بِهِ وجادَ وأسعفا

    Your return to the homeland was a joyous feast;

God bestowed it, gave generously, and granted aid.

You have indeed attained such a height of divine favor

That no ambitious seeker attains without contentment.

    لا زِلت مُكتَسِياً تُقىً وَتَعفُّفا

    You entered pilgrimage consecration, striving in restraint and piety;

May you ever remain clothed in piety and restraint.

And you exerted every effort seeking approval

From the Giver—so who could deem you extravagant?

He granted you pilgrimage and a visit to Ahmad,

The best of creation, and through him you gained honor.

So be safe, live long, and rejoice in your pilgrimage, wearing

Robes of perfection, honored and ennobled.

And ours are congratulations, joy, and delight

In meeting loved ones: time has kept faith with us.
