When the down on Saʿd al-Dīn’s cheeks appeared,

like the full moon’s halo at the zenith of perfection,

it shone before us as a line upon splendor’s page,

like the Verse of Light, wondrous in form.

It became a talisman and protection against the

evil eye, even if it came with lawful enchantment.

The houris were bewildered by its beauty—how

delightful the words of those coquettish beauties:

With the pen of divine power—the chronogram declared—not

with musk, Fortune inscribed beauty’s talisman.
