Adorn your love with the languid-eyed one;
His love enslaves my heavy eyelids
And guard your ears from hearing reproach.
And blocks my ears from heeding advice
بِنَفسيmy soul as ransom for مَنthe one شَكاcomplained الواشونthe slanderers مِنهُof him
وَقالواand they said بعsell حَبيبكyour beloved واِبغِand seek عَنهُin his stead
My soul be ransom for him of whom the slanderers complained,
With my own soul have I heard the slanderers accuse him
And said, “Sell your beloved, and seek in his stead
And bid, “Sell your beloved and seek another
حَبيباًa beloved آخراًanother تَحياyou will live سَعيداhappy
فَقُلتso I said لَهُمto them مَقالةthe words ذيof one possessing اِعترافacknowledgment
Another beloved, and you will live happily.”
That you may live in bliss”
So I answered them with words of acknowledgment,
To them I made a full confession and said
وَلَكنّيbut I جَنحتinclined إِلىtoward الخلافِdisagreement
ألاtake heed ياO صائِغينfashioners of حُلىthe ornaments القَوافيof rhyme
Yet I inclined toward disagreement:
“Nay, I have chosen otherwise”
“Hear me, O fashioners of the ornaments of rhyme:
O you who string the pearls of verse
إِذاif كانَwas القَديمthe old one هُوَhe المُصافيthe devoted friend
وَخانَand betrayed فَكَيفthen how أَأتمنcan I trust الجَديداthe new one
If the old beloved was the devoted friend,
If the old proves true, how can I trust the new?
And betrayed me, how can I trust the new one?”
