بِاللَهِby God ياO ذاتlady with الخَالِthe beauty mark
بِاللَهِ يا ذات الخَالِ
لاdo not تَسمَعيlisten قَولthe words of الخاليone free of love
لا تَسمَعي قَول الخالي
By God, O lady with the beauty mark,
By Allah, O you of beauty
Do not heed the words of one free of love.
Do not listen to the words of the critic
شَمسa sun تَناهَتshe reached the utmost بِالعجبِin pride
شَمس تَناهَت بِالعجبِ
حَتّىuntil تَوارَتshe hid herself بِالحجبِbehind veils
حَتّى تَوارَت بِالحجبِ
A sun who reached the height of pride,
A sun that hid in wonder
Until she hid herself behind veils.
Until it disappeared behind the veils
وَإِذand when تَدانَتshe drew near لِلقُربِfor intimacy
وَإِذ تَدانَت لِلقُربِ
ماwhat ليfor me وَماand what للعذّالِfor the reproachers
ما لي وَما للعذّالِ
And when she drew near in intimacy,
And when it came closer in proximity
What have I to do with the reproachers?
What is mine and what is for the blamer
زارَتshe visited وَسحرand the magic of الأَحداقِthe pupils
زارَت وَسحر الأَحداقِ
يَسبيtakes captive عُقولthe minds of العشّاقِthe lovers
يَسبي عُقول العشّاقِ
She visited, and the magic of her eyes
She visited and the magic of her glances
Takes captive the minds of lovers.
Captivates the minds of lovers
وَوَجههاand her face بِالإِشراقin radiance
وَوَجهها بِالإِشراق
يَحكيresembles سَناthe brilliance of البَدرthe full moon العاليon high
يَحكي سَنا البَدر العالي
And her face, in its radiance,
And her face with radiance
Mirrors the brilliance of the full moon on high.
Tells the tale of the full moon
فاقَتshe surpassed عَلىabove غُصنthe bough of الرندِthe laurel
فاقَت عَلى غُصن الرندِ
بِلينin the suppleness of أَعطافthe curves of القدِّthe figure
بِلين أَعطاف القدِّ
She surpassed the laurel bough
She surpassed the branch of the willow
In the suppleness of her figure's curves.
With the softness of her slender waist
وَلَحظهاand her glance التُركيTurkish الهِنديIndian
وَلَحظها التُركي الهِندي
يَحميguards لَمىthe lips' dusky hue الثَغرthe mouth الحاليlovely
يَحمي لَمى الثَغر الحالي
And her Turkish, Indian glance
And her Turkish tender glance
Guards the dusky hue of her lovely lips.
Protects the radiance of her lips
حازَتshe attained مَقامthe station of التَنزيهِtranscendence
حازَت مَقام التَنزيهِ
عَنbeyond الظباthe gazelles بِالتَشبيهِin comparison
عَن الظبا بِالتَشبيهِ
She attained a station of transcendence,
She attained the position of purity
Beyond comparison with gazelles.
Above the gazelles in comparison
فاِروِso recount أَحاديثthe tales of التيهِproud bearing
فاِروِ أَحاديث التيهِ
عَنof لُطفthe grace of جرّtrailing الأَذيالِthe garment hems
عَن لُطف جرّ الأَذيالِ
So recount the tales of her proud bearing,
So narrate the tales of bewilderment
Of the grace with which she trails her hems.
About the gentleness of trailing the train
أَذكىmost fragrant صَلاتيmy blessings لِلهاديupon the Guide
أَذكى صَلاتي لِلهادي
شَمسthe sun of الهُدىguidance وَالإِسعادِand the bestowal of happiness
شَمس الهُدى وَالإِسعادِ
My most fragrant blessings upon the Guide,
My prayers revive for the Guide
The sun of guidance and felicity,
The sun of guidance and prosperity
وَآلand the people of ناديهhis assembly الناديbounteous
وَآل ناديه النادي
أَهلpeople of النَدىgenerosity وَالإِفضالِand beneficence
أَهل النَدى وَالإِفضالِ
And upon the people of his bounteous assembly,
And his family who called out
People of generosity and beneficence.
