When you visit those who find your company burdensome,
When you visit those who find your presence burdensome,

Do not pin your hopes on affection—for indeed,
And do not nurture hopes of affection, for indeed,
when sickness causes agony, it baffles the physician.
When the ailment causes anguish, it defeats the healer.

It is shameful for one stung once from a den
if, deluded, he returns to the lair a second time.
If he returns, deluded, to the den a second time.
