    تَجد الزَمان شُيوخَهُ شُبّانهُ

    Behold the virtues of the two Farqad stars of piety's firmament;

    you will find that the age's elders are its youths.

    سَعد بِسَعد الدين لاحَ قِرانهُ

    The good omen of safety in Salim adorned him;

    with Sa'd al-Din, good fortune's conjunction shone.

    Two gallant men: each of them attained the heights

    through excellence, and his peers took pride in him.

    He inherited perfection from his forefathers, and only

    his close companions among humankind inherit perfection.

    وَالعام خَير شُهوره رَمَضانهُ

    So both are like the month of fasting, since both are related to it;

    and Ramadan is the best of the year's months.

    وَالعَقل يسعد رَبّه رُجحانهُ

    Both proved weightier in reason's scales, and so stood out;

    and the mind's greater weight brings happiness to its possessor.

    Each bore the mark of manhood, when there appeared

    to us, on the parchment of his cheeks, its heading.

    Thus the cheek-down of that one and this one heralds happiness:

    that spring has come and its season has grown pleasant.

    And when I looked closely at both of them,

    I dated it: "A garden whose sweet basil has appeared."
