O songbird, warbling on a bān-tree bough,
Be gentle, for patience, by God, has departed.
ماnothing فيin جنانيmy soul ياO حَمامdoves الحِمىthe sanctuary
وَالقَلبand the heart إِلّاexcept ذكرremembrance of تِلكَthose الجِنانgardens
In my soul, O doves of the sanctuary,
And in my heart is only the memory of those gardens.
إِذاwhen ذكرتI recall الربعthe dwelling دانيwithin reach الجَنىthe fruit
بتُّI spent the night كَماjust as باتَspent the night صَريعone felled by الدنانthe wine jars
When I recall the dwelling with its low-hanging fruit,
I pass the night as one felled by wine jars does.
أَصبوI yearn إِذاwhen هَبَّتblew نَسيمthe breeze of الصَباthe east wind
وَكانَand were عَهديmy bond لِلصِباto youth صَبوَتانtwo youthful passions
I yearn when the east wind's breeze blows,
And two youthful passions were my bond with youth.
أَهوىI love البُدورthe full moons التمّfully rounded فيماfor what رَوَتthey recounted

I love the moons at their fullest for what they tell
Of the beauty of those lovely faces—
مِنof كُلِّevery شَمسa sun تَحتَbeneath فَجرthe dawn of الطلىthe necks
فيin لَيلa night of شعرٍhair طَلعrose الفرقدانthe two Farqad stars
Each one a sun: beneath the dawn of necks,
In a night of hair, the two Farqad stars rose.
