And when our means grew straitened,
When life constricted around us,
And no young man among us attained his wish,
And no young man among us reached his goal,

فولّى ثُمَّ أَعطانا قَفاهُ
We hoped to obtain God's provision as a bounty,
We hoped to gain God’s grace and bounty,
But it turned away, then showed us the back of its neck.
But He turned away and left us to fend for ourselves.
