وَيحalas for قَلبيmy heart كَمhow much يُقاسيit endures شَجناًsorrow
وَبودّيand I wish أَنَّهُthat it لاnot يعشقُfalls in love
Alas for my heart! How much sorrow it endures!
Oh my aching heart, how much sorrow it bears
And I wish it would not fall in love.
Yet I wish it would not fall in love
كُلّماwhenever قُلتI said سَلاit has forgotten عَهدthe days of الصباyouth
قالit said ليto me إِنَّthat التَصابيyouthful dalliance أليقُmore fitting
Whenever I said it had forgotten the days of youth,
Whenever I said goodbye to the days of youth
It told me that youthful dalliance was more fitting.
It told me composure is more fitting
قاتِليmy slayer ذوpossessing مُقلةan eye زَرقاءblue لَمdid not
أَرَهاI see it إِلّاexcept وَقَلبيand my heart يَخفقُbeats fast
My slayer has a blue eye; never
My killer has blue eyeliner, I've never
Have I seen it without my heart pounding.
Seen it except my heart starts pounding
ياO رَشيقgraceful القَدّform رِفقاًbe gentle بِفَتىًwith a youth
بِسِهامwith the arrows of اللَحظthe glance أَضحىhas become يَرشقُis shot at (contextual reading)
O you of graceful form, be gentle with a youth
O elegant of stature, go easy on a lad
Now struck by the arrows of the glance.
Who by your glance's arrows is pierced
أَعدوّيis it my enemy? عَينكَyour eye الزَرقاءُblue أَمor
هِيَit ليto me مَحبوبَةٌa beloved لاnot تُشفِقُshows pity
Is your blue eye my enemy, or
Does your blue eye torment me or
Is it my beloved, who shows no pity?
Is it a beloved who shows no mercy?
ماnot سَمعناwe have heard بحبيبof a beloved أَزرَقblue-eyed
إِنَّماonly قالواthey said عَدوٌّan enemy أَزرَقُblue-eyed
We have never heard of a blue-eyed beloved;
Never heard of a blue eyed sweetheart
They have only said, 'A blue-eyed enemy.'
Rather they say a blue eyed foe
