How many shoots of hardship the hand of ease has swept away,
How many shoots of hardship has the hand of ease withered!
and how many banners of good, once folded, it has unfurled.
And how many banners of goodness, once furled, has it unfurled!
فَياso, O مَنone whose أَعاديهِhis enemies عَلىupon كَيدِهِplotting against him نَوَتresolved

O you whose enemies have resolved to plot against you,
So, O you whose enemies have resolved to plot against you,
when your affairs beset you and grow entangled,
when your affairs grow difficult and tangled, hold fast
بِصَبرٍto patience فَإِنّfor indeed اليسرease مِفتاحُهُits key الصَبرُpatience
فَكَمfor how often مَنَحَgranted الرَحمَنthe Most Merciful بِالصَبرthrough patience عبدَهُHis servant
hold fast to patience, for patience is the key to ease.
to patience, for patience is the key to ease.
How often the All-Merciful, through patience, has granted His servant
For how often has the Most Merciful, through patience, granted His servant
مَواهبَgifts إِحسانof kindness بِهاwith them قَدalready أَمَدَّهُsustained him

gifts of beneficence by which He sustained him.
gifts of kindness with which He has sustained him!
So forsake all besides Him whose glory the universe proclaims,
So forsake all but Him whose glory the universe praises,
وَلاand do not تَشكوَنever complain إِلّاexcept إِلىto اللَهGod وَحدهُHim alone

and complain to none but God alone.
and complain to none but God alone.
For from Him come all boons and ease.
For from Him come benefits and ease.

No servant who thought well of Him was ever disappointed,
For no servant who thought well of Him has been disappointed,
nor did anyone who sought from Him return deprived.
nor has anyone who sought His bounty come away deprived.

If you fear an affair’s constriction, turn toward His safety.
When you fear straitened circumstances, you hope for His protection;
Perhaps relief will come, brought by God; indeed,
perhaps God will bring relief; indeed, He

each day He has some work within His creation.
has a task each day within His creation.
