Why do the reproachers blame me for my passion?
Why do critics blame me for my passion?
And what harm is it to them that I suffer it alone?
How does my suffering alone hurt them?

I go at evening with my yearnings and at dawn with my longing;
I go with my longings and rise with my wakefulness,
for my sorrow is from his sorrow, my sleeplessness from his.
So my ardour matches their ardour, my sleeplessness matches their sleeplessness.

The dove of the great trees grieved me from the sanctuary's garden,
The doves of Dauḥ stirred my passions from the meadows of Ḥimā,
rousing my sorrows and sparing no effort.
Exciting my passions, tirelessly,

while I spent the night sorrowful, neither repeating nor uttering a sound.
I spent the night passionate, unable to repeat or respond.

and hopes his loved ones will fulfill their promise—
And expects loyalty from his loved ones,

yet neither my longing helps nor my tears avail.
But neither my pining consoles me, nor my tears avail.

No joy for me in the abodes of the tribe of Saʿd.

I conversed with the Pleiades as if I were
Jadhima, when his reason strayed from sound judgment.
Judhaymah, when their setting eluded his guidance.

By my soul that tosses me about with its caprices,
to me, whenever she graciously grants me affection.
Honouring me when it is friendly, scorning me when aloof.

The dearest life for me is to humble myself for its honour,
and my finest attribute is her saying to me, 'O my slave.'
The best of my qualities is its saying to me “O my servant!”

If it says “We are true to you to our promise.”

While my promises were like coats of mail.

For the sister of maidens, the chaste, upright in stature,

she shows you lions' hearts in the oryxes' snares.
They show you the眠battlements of the dazzling castles.

when, out of coquetry, she inclines toward rebuff.
When she turns from allurement to indifference.

when she reveals from her chest the twin stars of her breasts.
When I catch sight of her breasts like two planets.

When she sees Abraham's fire in my heart,
If she sees the fire of passion in my entrails,
she sweeps it away and greets me with peace and coolness.
She draws her veil over me and greets me with coolness.

My eyes would never exchange her for the gardens of eternity.

In the ascendant of good fortune through the blessing of God.

As the Caliph made covenant with the Master of Guidance.

The days point to him with the unique standard.

drawn from mankind, without him as its centerpiece.
Except him, for he was the clasp of the necklace.

they are fragrant incense, yet God has kept them without a rival.

God protect you—He has protected a sublime nation,
and came from artistry, sweeping along in a mantle.
Which came into being through creativity, adorned in finery.

She grew on Najd's hills and recounted, from her own nature,
It was nurtured in the uplands of Najd, and from its nature
the east breeze among narcissi and laurel.
The breeze of youth blew among maidens and adolescents.
أَتَتshe came وَالمذاكيand the seasoned steeds خَلفَهاbehind her فَتقلّدتso she donned

She came with seasoned steeds behind her, and donned
It came with its adornments following behind, wearing
the jewels of pride for winning, while unadorned sleek steeds drew back.
The necklaces of pride outstripping, the mantles trailing.
فَماso no اِرتفعتrose كَعبa heel لكعبof Ka'b أَمامهاbefore her
وَلاnor نَبغَتexcelled أَقلامthe pens of نابغةNabigha الجعديal-Ja'di
So no heel of Ka'b rose before her,
No heel was raised before it, nor did any eminent pen
nor did the pens of Nabigha al-Ja'di excel.
Arise, not even Naabighah al-Jaʿdī’s.
هِيَshe الغادةthe graceful maiden الحَسناthe beautiful الَّتيwhose فاقَexcelled حُسنهاher beauty
وَأدهشand dazzled مِنthose قَبليbefore me سَناهاher radiance وَمِنand those بَعديafter me
She is the fair, graceful maiden whose beauty excelled,
It is the lovely, beautiful one whose beauty surpassed
and whose radiance dazzled those before me and those after me.
And whose flawlessness before me and after me is astounding.
فَلَيسَso there is no لَهاfor her عَنapart from ذكرِmentioning فَضلكyour excellence مِنany غِنىًdispensing
وَلَيسَand there is no لَهاfor her عَنfrom شُكرthanking صنعكyour kindness مِنany بُدِّescape
She cannot dispense with mentioning your excellence,
It needs no wealth apart from mentioning your merit,
nor can she escape thanking you for your kindness.
And it has no alternative to thanking your kindness.
ذكرتI mentioned سَجاياكyour traits الَّتيwhich توجبdeserve الثَناpraise
فَأَصبحso became ما(emphasis) بَينamong الوَرىmankind ذِكرهاtheir mention ورديmy daily litany
I mentioned your traits that deserve praise,
I recalled your fine qualities which call for praise,
and their mention among mankind became my daily litany.
So that what is between heaven and earth sings their tune as my song.
أَقولI say هَوىlove for هِندHind تَملّكpossessed خاطِريmy thoughts
وَلَيسَbut it is not هَوىlove for هِندHind عنيتI meant وَلاnor دَعدِDa'd
I say, 'Love of Hind has possessed my thoughts,'
I say passion for India has seized my mind—
but I do not mean love of Hind or Da'd.
But not passion for India or for arrows.
وَلَكنّbut أَوصافاًqualities لَديكyou possess كَريمةnoble
ملكتyou won بِهاthrough them قَلبيmy heart وَكدتand you thwarted بِهاthrough them ضدّيmy adversary
Rather, it is the noble qualities you possess:
Rather, your noble traits have captivated my heart
through them you won my heart and thwarted my adversary.
And nearly overwhelmed my strength.

And a necklace of perfection adorned qualities of yours,
A necklace of perfection adorned your features,
which you acquired from the master of loosing and binding.
Taking hold of me from the Owner of adornment and gift.

So be a sun of honor whose light never sets,
So be a sun of honour whose light has no setting,
whose dwelling proclaims bounty and aid for visitors.
Calling the tribes with a voice of plenty and bounty!
