Repent, O deceiver—may God curse you—

since repentance is accepted from a sinner.

By God, there is no flaw in the midmorning sun,

even if your might drove it west.

It reappears as it was when it set, and its rays

obscure every star on the horizon.

And here am I, the full moon: whenever you subject me

to eclipse, I shine beyond the pitch-dark gloom.

O scorpion of deceit, whenever you sting

my sandal, for whatever reason, you will be struck with it.

Never, by God, has the hawk trembled at

    the shrill sound of a hornet or a grasshopper;

nor has the buzzing of flies diverted

the lion's resolve from its goal.

So tread gently on your lame leg: the one

you raced is more agile than a qutrub.

You seek vengeance for Kulayb, yet

your grandfather belongs neither to Bakr nor to Taghlib.

I am no dhimmi; if he does not obey,

I force him into obedience with the curved sword.

He circles around the herd, but

cannot tell a gazelle from a hare.
