أَنا الَّتي اِختارَني قَومي سَمير عُلىً

إِنّ الأَديب فَصيح النطق مُختارُ

إِنّ الأَديب فَصيح النطق مُختارُ

I am she whom my people chose as glory's companion by night.

I am she whom my people chose, Samir Olaya

Indeed, the man of letters, eloquent in speech, is chosen.

The eloquent poet is well-spoken and distinguished

إِذا الهَوى بِفُؤادي مرّ أكتمه

إِذا الهَوى بِفُؤادي مرّ أكتمه

وَلِلهَوى بِفُؤاد الحرّ إِسرارُ

وَلِلهَوى بِفُؤاد الحرّ إِسرارُ

When love passes through my heart, I conceal it.

If passion passes through my heart I conceal it

And love is kept secret in a noble person's heart.

And passion in the free heart has secrets

قالوا تَحمَّلتِ نيراناً فَقُلت لَهُم

قالوا تَحمَّلتِ نيراناً فَقُلت لَهُم

النار في حُبِّ مَن أَهوى وَلا العارُ

النار في حُبِّ مَن أَهوى وَلا العارُ

They said, "You have borne flames"; so I said to them:

They said you have endured fires, so I said to them

"Fire for love of the one I love, but not dishonor!"

The fire of loving whom I love, no shame

شهرت حَتّى غَدَت تَعشو السراة إِلى

شهرت حَتّى غَدَت تَعشو السراة إِلى

ناري وَلي بِمَزيد الفَضل آثارُ

ناري وَلي بِمَزيد الفَضل آثارُ

I became renowned, until the nobles began making their way by night toward

I became famous until the wanderers began to visit

my fire; and I bear marks of abundant excellence.

My fire, and for me traces of superior virtue

فَها أَنا مثل صَخر حَيث قيل بِهِ

فَها أَنا مثل صَخر حَيث قيل بِهِ

كَأَنَّهُ علم في رَأسِهِ نارُ

كَأَنَّهُ علم في رَأسِهِ نارُ

So here I am, like Sakhr, of whom it was said:

So here I am like a boulder about which it was said

"As though he were a mountain with a fire on its summit."

As if there were a fire on its peak
