يا حسن مَنظر شاطئ البَحر الَّذي
يَجلوclears الخَواطرthoughts مِنهُfrom it أَحسَنfinest مَنظَرِview
يَجلو الخَواطر مِنهُ أَحسَن مَنظَرِ
How lovely the sight of the seashore, whose
O beauty of the seashore scene
fairest vista clears the mind.
Which clears the mind, the fairest sight to glean
هاجَتraged بِهِupon it هوجُfierce الرِياحthe winds فَأرسلَتand so sent forth
هاجَت بِهِ هوجُ الرِياح فَأرسلَت
أَمواجُهُits waves كَطَلائعlike the advance troops of الإسكندرِAlexander
أَمواجُهُ كَطَلائع الإسكندرِ
Fierce winds raged upon it and sent forth
The winds have stirred its surging waves
its waves like Alexander’s advance guard.
That crash like legions under Alexander's reign
تَطفوfloat عَلىover تِلكَthose الصُخورthe rocks وَتَنثَنيand turn back
تَطفو عَلى تِلكَ الصُخور وَتَنثَني
منهارَةًcollapsing كَالمدمعlike a tear المتحدِّرِstreaming down
منهارَةً كَالمدمع المتحدِّرِ
They float over those rocks and turn back,
They foam and spray those rocky shores
collapsing like a tear streaming down,
Cascading, teardrops coursing more and more
كَسلاسلlike chains مِنof فضّةsilver بِفتائلwith strands
كَسلاسل مِن فضّة بِفتائل
نيطَتwere fastened بِهنَّto them مِنof الحَريرsilk الأَخضَرِgreen
نيطَت بِهنَّ مِن الحَرير الأَخضَرِ
like silver chains with strands
Like silvery chains and emerald lace
of green silk fastened to them.
That gracefully this sea's expanse embrace
