ماnot تَراءىappeared هِلالُcrescent عامٍyear جَديدnew
ما تَراءى هِلالُ عامٍ جَديد
لَكto you إِلّاexcept وَأَنتَwhile you are بَدرfull moon سُعودِgood fortunes
لَك إِلّا وَأَنتَ بَدر سُعودِ
No crescent of a new year has appeared
To you but that you were a full moon of good fortune.
فَلَكso, for you التَهنيئاتcongratulations بِالعامon the year خُصَّتwere reserved
فَلَك التَهنيئات بِالعام خُصَّت
رُبَّmany a عامٍyear يُخصّis singled out بِالتَقييدِfor recording
رُبَّ عامٍ يُخصّ بِالتَقييدِ
So the year's congratulations were reserved for you;
Many a year is singled out for recording.
ياO وَحيدَunique one of الزَمانthe age ذاتاًin person وَوَصفاًand in qualities
يا وَحيدَ الزَمان ذاتاً وَوَصفاً
وَفَريدand peerless one of الأَوانthe time وَاِبنand son of الفَريدِthe peerless one
وَفَريد الأَوان وَاِبن الفَريدِ
O unique one of the age, in person and qualities,
And peerless one of the time, son of the peerless one,
وَحَميدand praiseworthy الطِباعdispositions وَالحَمدand praise طَبعاًby nature
وَحَميد الطِباع وَالحَمد طَبعاً
لَيسَis not يُهدىoffered إِلّاexcept إِلىto المَحمودِthe praiseworthy
لَيسَ يُهدى إِلّا إِلى المَحمودِ
And praiseworthy in disposition—for praise, by nature,
Is offered only to the praiseworthy.
وَنَديمand companion of النهىreason سَميرnightly companion of المَعاليlofty honors
وَنَديم النهى سَمير المَعالي
مُنذُsince قَدalready كانَhe was سَيّداًa lord فيin المهودِthe cradles
مُنذُ قَد كانَ سَيّداً في المهودِ
And companion of reason, nightly friend of lofty honors,
Since he was already a lord in the cradles.
وَرَفيعand lofty in المَقامstation أَصلاًin root وَفرعاًand in branch
وَرَفيع المَقام أَصلاً وَفرعاً
محتويهpossessing it مِنfrom طارفٍnewly acquired honors وَتَليدِand inherited honors
محتويه مِن طارفٍ وَتَليدِ
And exalted in station, in root and branch,
Possessing it in what is newly acquired and long inherited.
وَوَريثand heir to الفَخارpride فيin كُلِّevery مَجدٍglory
وَوَريث الفَخار في كُلِّ مَجدٍ
وَعلىًand eminence عَنfrom آبائِهِhis fathers وَالجُدودِand forefathers
وَعلىً عَن آبائِهِ وَالجُدودِ
And heir to pride in every glory
And eminence, from his fathers and forefathers.
أَنتَyou شبلlion-cub of النَجيبthe noble one فيin كُلّevery فَضلٍexcellence
أَنتَ شبل النَجيب في كُلّ فَضلٍ
وَكَمالٍand perfection وَكُلُّand every خَلقٍcharacter trait حَميدِpraiseworthy
وَكَمالٍ وَكُلُّ خَلقٍ حَميدِ
You are the noble one's lion-cub in every excellence,
And perfection, and every praiseworthy trait.
لَيسَit is not بدعاa marvel لَوif فقتyou surpassed سائرall اقراfirst part of 'peers'
لَيسَ بدعا لَو فقت سائر اقرا
نكending of 'peers' plus 'your' ياO مُفرداًpeerless one بِلاwithout تَعديدenumeration
نك يا مُفرداً بِلا تَعديد
It is no marvel if you surpass all your peers,
O peerless one beyond all counting.
إِنif يفقexcels مَنone who يَنالgains بِالخطّthrough penmanship حَظّاًa share of fortune
إِن يفق مَن يَنال بِالخطّ حَظّاً
كُنتyou were باريsharpener of أَقلامpens of عَبدAbd: servant of الحَميدِal-Hamid: the Praiseworthy
كُنت باري أَقلام عَبد الحَميدِ
If one who wins fortune through penmanship excels,
You were the sharpener of Abd al-Hamid's pens.
أَوor يَنلgains بِالنَهيthrough reason أَخوa possessor of الحلمforbearance مَجداglory
أَو يَنل بِالنَهي أَخو الحلم مَجدا
فَلأَنتَthen you indeed الأَحَقُّthe most deserving بِالتَمجيدِof glorification
فَلأَنتَ الأَحَقُّ بِالتَمجيدِ
Or if a man of forbearance wins glory through reason,
Then you indeed are most worthy of exaltation.
قُلّدَwas adorned المَجدglory مِنكَby you عقدَa necklace of كَمالperfection
قُلّدَ المَجد مِنكَ عقدَ كَمال
وَاِحتَواهand possessed it سِواكothers besides you بِالتَقليدِthrough imitation
وَاِحتَواه سِواك بِالتَقليدِ
Glory was decked by you with a necklace of perfection,
And others possessed it through imitation.
فَمَتىso when ماever (emphasis) ذووthose possessing المَراتبranks عُدّواare counted
فَمَتى ما ذوو المَراتب عُدّوا
فيamong الوَرىhumankind كُنتَyou were أَنتَyou yourself بَيتَverse of القَصيدِthe poem
في الوَرى كُنتَ أَنتَ بَيتَ القَصيدِ
So whenever men of rank are counted
Among humankind, you are the poem's choicest verse.
قَدindeed تَسامَتhave risen high دِيارُناour lands بِكَthrough you عِزّاًin might
قَد تَسامَت دِيارُنا بِكَ عِزّاً
وَأَماناًand in safety وَخابَand was thwarted كُلّevery مَريدِrebel
وَأَماناً وَخابَ كُلّ مَريدِ
Our lands have risen through you in might
And safety, and every rebel has been thwarted.
لَيسَthere is no فيناin us لَياقةworthiness تَقتَضيthat warrants الفَوfirst part of 'the attainment'
لَيسَ فينا لَياقة تَقتَضي الفَو
زend of 'attainment' بِتَشريفكthrough your honoring البَهيجthe joyous السَعيدِthe auspicious
ز بِتَشريفك البَهيج السَعيدِ
We have no merit entitling us to the privilege
Of your joyous, auspicious honoring of us.
إِنَّماnothing but أَنتَyou منحةa gift of اللَهِGod جوداًin generosity
إِنَّما أَنتَ منحة اللَهِ جوداً
قَدindeed حَباهاHe bestowed it لِهَؤلاءِupon these العَبيدِservants
قَد حَباها لِهَؤلاءِ العَبيدِ
You are but God's gift, bestowed in generosity,
Which He has granted to these servants.
وَكَذاكand thus العَبيدthe servants تَزدادgrow شُكراًin gratitude
وَكَذاك العَبيد تَزداد شُكراً
بِتَواليwith the succession of مَواهبgifts of المَعبودِthe Worshipped One
بِتَوالي مَواهب المَعبودِ
And thus the servants grow more thankful
As the Worshipped One's gifts follow one another.
قَدindeed بَسَطناwe spread الأَكفّthe palms نَدعوwe pray اِبتِهالاًin supplication
قَد بَسَطنا الأَكفّ نَدعو اِبتِهالاً
لِمَليكfor the king of الأَنامmankind عَبدAbd: servant of المَجيدِal-Majid: the Glorious
لِمَليك الأَنام عَبد المَجيدِ
We have spread our palms, praying in supplication,
For the king of mankind, Abd al-Majid,
صاحبlord of الدَولةthe state الَّتيwhich لَستI do not أَلقىfind
صاحب الدَولة الَّتي لَست أَلقى
مِثلهاits like دَولةa state بِهَذاin this الوُجودِexistence
مِثلها دَولة بِهَذا الوُجودِ
Lord of that state—I have not encountered
A state like it in this world.
دَولةa state لاnot تَزالceases تَرغَبseeks فيماin that which
دَولة لا تَزال تَرغَب فيما
فيهِin it تَوطيدstrengthening of ملكهاits dominion المَسعودِthe fortunate
فيهِ تَوطيد ملكها المَسعودِ
A state that never ceases to seek
What strengthens its fortunate dominion.
دَولةa state حازreceived فَضلهاits bounty كُلُّevery دانٍnear one
دَولة حاز فَضلها كُلُّ دانٍ
مِنfrom among ذَويهاits people وَفازَand prospered كُلُّevery بَعيدِdistant one
مِن ذَويها وَفازَ كُلُّ بَعيدِ
A state whose bounty every near one has received
Among its people, and every distant one has prospered.
غَيرexcept أَنّاthat we لِلّهto God بِالعزّfor might نَدعوwe pray
غَير أَنّا لِلّه بِالعزّ نَدعو
لِعلاهاfor its eminence وَالنَصرand victory وَالتأييدِand support
لِعلاها وَالنَصر وَالتأييدِ
Yet we pray to God for might
For its eminence, and for victory and support.
وَبتوفيقهاand for granting it success وَإلهامهاand inspiring it ماwhat
وَبتوفيقها وَإلهامها ما
فيهِin which تَسموrise high دعائمpillars of التَشييدِconstruction
فيهِ تَسمو دعائم التَشييدِ
And for its success, and for it to be inspired with what
Raises high the pillars of its edifice.
وَبإِظهارand for making manifest شَأنهاits stature فيamong المَعاليlofty honors
وَبإِظهار شَأنها في المَعالي
وَبخسرانand for the downfall of ضدّهاits foe وَالحَسودِand the envious
وَبخسران ضدّها وَالحَسودِ
And for its stature to be made manifest among lofty honors,
And for the downfall of its foe and the envious.
فَلَقدfor indeed شرّفتhas been honored إِيالةprovince of صيداSidon
فَلَقد شرّفت إِيالة صيدا
بِكَthrough you تَشريفas the honoring of عاطلan unadorned one بِعُقودِwith necklaces
بِكَ تَشريف عاطل بِعُقودِ
For the province of Sidon has indeed been honored
Through you, as one unadorned is graced with necklaces.
وَعَلىand above غَيرِهاothers besides it بِكَthrough you اِمتازَتit was distinguished اليَوfirst part of 'today'
وَعَلى غَيرِها بِكَ اِمتازَت اليَو
مَend of 'today' اِمتِيازdistinction of المَوجودthe existent عَنfrom مَفقودِthe absent
مَ اِمتِياز المَوجود عَن مَفقودِ
Through you it stands apart from the others today,
As the existent stands apart from the absent.
فَلَكَso, for you اللَهGod مِنwhat a (admiring) وَحيدunique one فَريدpeerless
فَلَكَ اللَه مِن وَحيد فَريد
نَعتهُhis description قَدindeed سَماhas risen high عَنbeyond التَحديدِdefinition
نَعتهُ قَد سَما عَن التَحديدِ
May God be with you, unique and peerless one,
Whose description has risen beyond all limits.
بَدرa full moon of حلمٍforbearance بَداappeared بِمَطلعon a horizon of أنسٍdelight
بَدر حلمٍ بَدا بِمَطلع أنسٍ
مشرقاًshining فيat أَوجthe zenith of الهَناhappiness وَالسُعودِand good fortunes
مشرقاً في أَوج الهَنا وَالسُعودِ
A full moon of forbearance, risen on a horizon of delight,
Shining at the zenith of happiness and good fortune.
قَدindeed أَفادَhas imparted الأَحكامthe rulings حكمةwisdom of فكرa mind
قَد أَفادَ الأَحكام حكمة فكر
واضعputting الحَزمresolve مَوضعin the place of التَرديدِvacillation
واضع الحَزم مَوضع التَرديدِ
He has endowed rulings with the wisdom of a mind
That puts resolve in the place of vacillation.
فَحَباهso favored him الإلهGod تَوفيقsuccess عزٍّhonor
فَحَباه الإله تَوفيق عزٍّ
وَهوَand He رَبLord of العَطاgiving وَربّand Lord of الجودِgenerosity
وَهوَ رَب العَطا وَربّ الجودِ
So God favored him with glorious success,
And He is the Lord of giving and the Lord of generosity.
قُلتI said إِذwhen قيلَit was said اللَهGod (in an oath) أرّخrecord the date of حباهhis bounty
قُلت إِذ قيلَ اللَه أرّخ حباه
دُمremain سَعيداًhappy بِخَيرwith the blessings of عامa year سَعيدِhappy
دُم سَعيداً بِخَير عام سَعيدِ
I said, when told, 'By God, record the date of his bounty':
'Remain happy with the blessings of a happy year.'
Sol 6.1
