يا أَوحدَ الأُدباءِ إِنّي ناصِحٌ
لاnot عاذِلٌa reproacher بَلrather عاذِرٌone who excuses فيمَنamong those who عَذرhave excused
لا عاذِلٌ بَل عاذِرٌ فيمَن عَذر
O peerless man of letters, I am a sincere adviser,
Oh foremost of poets, my counsel I bring
Not a reproacher, but one who excuses, among those who have excused.
Not censorious, but making allowance for all
لاdo not تَجلسنَّever sit إِلىbeside المَليحthe fair one فَإِنَّنيfor indeed I
لا تَجلسنَّ إِلى المَليح فَإِنَّني
أَخشىI fear عَلَيكfor you الرَشحa cold مِنfrom ضوءlight القَمرof the moon
أَخشى عَلَيك الرَشح مِن ضوء القَمر
Never sit beside the fair one, for I
Sit not with the fair, lest the moonlight should fling
Fear you may catch a cold from the moonlight.
Its sheen o’er your visage, and prove your downfall
