أَكُرُّI return إِلىto لَيلىLayla وَأَحسِبُand I think أَنَّنيthat I
كَريمٌdear عَلىto لَيلىLayla وَغَيريand someone other than me كَريمُهاher beloved
I return to Layla, and I think that I
I yearn for Layla though I reckon
am dear to Layla, though another is her beloved.
That I'm generously treated by Layla, and so are others.
فَأَصبَحتُso I became قَدalready أَجمَعتُI firmly resolved هَجراًabandonment لِبَيتِهاof her house
وَفيand in العَينِthe eye مِنfrom لَيلىLayla قَذىًa mote ماnot يَريمُهاleaves it
So now I have firmly resolved to forsake her house,
So I've decided to completely shun her house
yet in my eye is a mote from Layla that never leaves it.
With some sadness for Layla that grieves me.
لَئنif indeed آثَرَتshe favored بِالوُدِّwith affection أَهلَthe people بِلادِهاof her land
عَلىover نازِحٍone far away مِنfrom أَرضِهاher land لاnot نَلومُهاwe blame her
If indeed she favors the people of her land with her love
If she prefers those of her town
over one far from her land, we do not blame her.
Over an emigrant from her land, we do not blame her.
وَماand not يَستَويis equal مَنone who لاnot يُرىis seen غَيرَexcept for لِمَّةٍa passing visit
وَمَنand one who هوhe ثاوٍdwelling عِندَهاwith her لاnot يَريمُهاleaves her
Nor is one seen only on a passing visit equal
For it's not equal, one who's absent save for a moment
to one who dwells with her and never leaves her.
And one staying with her, not denied by her.
