أَتَرجوdo you hope? أَنto تَنالَyou get at بَنيthe sons of عِقالٍʿIqāl
رَجاءٌa hope مِنكَof yours تَطلُبُهُyou seek it بَعيدُdistant
Do you hope to get at the sons of ʿIqāl?
Do you hope that the sons of reason will attain
That hope of yours, which you pursue, is far out of reach.
A hope from you that you seek in vain?
فَإِنَّكَfor indeed you قَدalready قَرَعتَyou struck صَفاةَthe hard rock of قَومٍa people
تَفَلَّلَsplintered عَنagainst مَناكِبَهاits shoulders الحَديدُiron
For you have struck a people's hard rock;
For you have struck the polished blades of a people
iron has splintered against its shoulders.
From whose shoulders iron has rolled off in vain.
رَأَيتُكَI saw you ياO فَرَزدَقُFarazdaq عُدتَyou turned back لَمّاwhen

I saw you, O Farazdaq, turn back when
I saw you, Farazdaq, when you returned after
the blow came upon you and the threat vanished.
Disaster struck and threats came to nothing.
