You called my being forth, where there was no caller

but You, and You made the promptings within me abundant.

And You told me, “Call upon God,” for He is the One

who called me—how, then, could He not answer my prayer?

And here I am, calling upon Him just after His call,

a fitting recompense, neither against me nor for me.

So if, by grace, He has answered, then His bounty

is rain, pouring down noble gifts in full measure.

Yet it is Him I hope for, and through the one

who is the gate for seekers, I have come to present myself.

He is the Chosen One, the treasure of purity, the mine of fidelity,

the radiance of being chosen, from whom comes the secret of my purity,

our means of approach before the Almighty; and indeed he

is the supreme mercy, through a divine outpouring.

Through him I sought access to Him, and by his standing

I sought intercession with the Lord through the best of patrons.

So, O my Lord, my share of calamities has grown,

and has clouded my drink after it had been clear.

And from a lofty height the hands of Your testing have hurled me

to the lowest, sunken depth of my affliction.

And whenever I seek, through trial, to advance

toward nearness to You, sorrow calls me from behind me.

The garment of patience has been torn—utterly torn!

and my patches fell short, for I found no mender.

And speckled serpents of my time have stung me

with the venom of harm, unjustly, and I found no healer by incantation.

So if only the obedient hope for bounty,

then who has the generosity to give to a sinner?

My God, my God, none but You is looked to in hope.

And by Your truth, I have come to none but You in hope.

And who is there to whom I may complain of my grievous poverty,

and who knows my wretched state before the complaint?

Indeed, my days have crushed the mountain of my patience, and now

the chambers of my palace stand empty because of calamities.

And harrowing calamity has nocked arrows against me,

of anguish and torment, amid which it has hurled me.

And it launched raids against me, charging; and now

the assailants rush upon me with the onslaught of injustice.

So, O my Lord, through all time the servant has no refuge

but You; so I seek refuge in humble supplication.

    وَحَقِّق لَهُ فَضلاً لَدَيكَ الأَمانِيا

    Rescue him with gentle favors, and grant him his wishes;

and graciously fulfill his hopes before You.

And crush the mountains of calamity at the descent of the

manifestation of beauty, wherever grace is near.

Shall I seek a mirage, gleaming as an illusion on a plain,

rather than You, when You purified my drink long ago?

And by Your truth, I hope for none but You, nor would I

turn to anyone other than You, even if my desire were denied.

If You are my Lord, it is honor enough for me

that I am a servant, striving toward Your door.

And my affirmation of Your Essence's oneness is witness enough for me

that You are One; we see no second to You.

If You wish to give, none can prevent it; and if

You wish to withhold from me, that is itself my gift.

By Your beautiful attributes, sacred in their purity,

and Your most beautiful names, exalted among names.
