لماwhen إليّupon me الحادثاتmisfortunes تناسقتcame in succession
وعليّand upon me خيلthe steeds النائباتof calamities تسابقتraced one another
When misfortunes came upon me in succession,
When misfortunes converged upon me,
And the steeds of calamity raced down upon me,
And horses of disasters raced to reach me,
ناديتI cried out مذwhen حاقتclosed in بناupon us وتحاوقتand gathered around
ياO ربّLord منby كلّall الوجودexistence تضايقتI felt hemmed in
I cried out when they beset us and closed in:
I called out as they closed in and hemmed me in:
O Lord, all existence has hemmed me in,
Oh Lord, from all existence I am constrained!
واشتدّand became difficult منfrom كلّall الجهاتdirections المخرجُthe way out
ضاقtightened الخناقthe noose لوسعbecause of the breadth of خرقthe tear الراقعِthe mender
And the way out grew difficult on every side.
The ways out grew perilous from every side,
The noose tightened, for the tear was too wide for the mender,
The noose tightened though the veil was ripped.
وعلىand upon الوثاقthe bonds اشتدّgrew taut حبلthe rope الواقعِof the calamity that befell
وقطعتand I severed منfrom كلّall الأنامhumankind مطامعيmy hopes
And calamity’s rope drew taut upon the bonds.
On strong fetters the hand of fate took grip,
And I severed my hopes from all humankind.
And all hopes were cut off from all mankind.
إنif لمnot تفرجهاYou relieve it بفضلٍthrough grace واسعabundant
عنّيfrom me وإلّاand otherwise مَنwho سواكother than You يفرِّجُbrings relief
If You do not lift this distress through abundant grace
If You do not relief bring with favor wide,
From me—then who but You can bring relief?
Who but You can bring me aid and set me free?
