    To us the instruments speak clearly, while speech is inarticulate.

    And melody's undotted letter is given dots by the spiritual state.

    And the melodies inspired by listening, within our spirit,

    Disclose to us the beloved's secret, and so we understand.

    لنا عن صبا نجد التجلّي يترجّم

    And the mellow nay has made plain what it intended;

    For us it gives voice to the east wind of the Najd of unveiling.

    فيا عجباً من مفصحٍ وهو أبكم

    And it has spoken eloquently, though mute among humankind;

    How wondrous, then, an eloquent speaker that is mute!

    وفي الصنج تلميح الإشارة يُفهم

    And the oud offers a hint, and the duff a tap;

    And in the cymbals, the sign's subtle hint is understood.

    ويبدي لنا الطنبور معنىً ويكتم

    The santir confides a secret to us through its loud sound;

    And the tanbur reveals a meaning to us, yet conceals it.

    And what comes from every instrument but breaths?

    While through them we revel in a garden,

    They speak of the strings of our listening's string,

    While we are silent and love speaks.
