يلومون في خلع العذار أخا الهوى
وماand not شربواthey drank كأسيmy cup وقدand indeed جهلواthey were ignorant of أمريmy state
وما شربوا كأسي وقد جهلوا أمري
They blame love’s devotee for casting off the bridle,
They blame me for casting off the veil, O love's brother,
Yet they have not drunk my cup, and know nothing of my state.
Yet they have not drunk my cup, nor understood my case.
وقدand indeed أنكرواthey denounced شطحيmy ecstatic utterances وخلعيand my casting off restraint وصبوتيand my passion
وقد أنكروا شطحي وخلعي وصبوتي
وماand not عندهمwith them علمٌknowledge بأنّof the fact that الهوىlove عذريmy excuse
وما عندهم علمٌ بأنّ الهوى عذري
And they have denounced my ecstatic utterances, my casting off restraint, and my passion,
They condemn my madness, my casting off, my passion-
Yet they do not know that love is my excuse.
Little they know that love alone can excuse me.
