The sign of the predawn breeze is the fragrance of ʿarār.

The breeze of dawn carries the sweetest scent,

And bring the gladdest news of the lady of the bracelet.

Bring me the most delightful news of the bracelet's mistress.

واحي بهنا المضنى بالغادة الحسنا

واحي بهنا المضنى بالغادة الحسنا

تحيي المشوق الظامي الخرَّد الحسان

تحيي المشوق الظامي الخرَّد الحسان

And revive the love-worn with bliss through the lovely maiden.

Greet her who torments me, with her beauty so fair,

The beautiful, bashful maidens revive the yearning, thirsty lover.

Bringing joy to the longing, passionate lover.

صبٌّ بفرط الوجد خالع العذار

صبٌّ بفرط الوجد خالع العذار

حيث بوادي نجدٍ ربّة الخمار

حيث بوادي نجدٍ ربّة الخمار

A lovesick lover casts off the bridle in overwhelming passion,

My love overflows, shunning all restraint,

where, in Najd’s valley, dwells the lady of the veil.

Where in the valley of Nejd is the mistress of the veil.

تبدي البهاء الأسنى بالمورد الأهنى

تحيي المشوق الظامي المولع الجنان

She reveals the loftiest splendor at the most delightful watering place.

Revealing the finest beauty at the most blissful meadow,

She revives the yearning, thirsty lover, impassioned at heart.

Bringing joy to the longing, enamored lover.

يا صاح سر بي سر بي فالهوى ربا

واقصد مغاني القرب من رُبى قُبا

واقصد مغاني القرب من رُبى قُبا

O friend, journey with me, journey with me, for love has grown.

Oh friend, keep my secret, keep my secret, for love holds sway,

And seek the abodes of nearness among the hills of Qubā.

Seek the sweetest intimacy near my beloved.

واشهد ذاك المغنى كالقاب أو أدنى

وارتشف مدام الجام من صفا الأدنان

And behold that abode, a bow’s span away or nearer.

And witness that singing, be it high or low,

And sip the goblet’s wine from the pure contents of the wine jars.

And sip the wine’s rapture, with cups of conviviality.

يا حبّذا ذا المجلى في سما الجمال

The lovely-featured beauty is unveiled in the adornments of coquetry.

The finest beauties are revealed in the charms of her grace,

O, how delightful this manifestation in the heaven of beauty!

How wonderful is her splendor in heaven’s glory.

طير البها غنَّى في نعتها الأسنى

طير البها غنَّى في نعتها الأسنى

ما قرية للرامي بعد عبدان

ما قرية للرامي بعد عبدان

The bird of splendor sang her most exalted praises.

The birds of delight sang the sweetest ode to her praise,

For the seeker, no village lies beyond ʿAbdān.

No home remains for the archer after Aden.

فطف بتلك الكعبه من حول المقام

فطف بتلك الكعبه من حول المقام

واشرب بزمزم شربه تطفي للأوام

واشرب بزمزم شربه تطفي للأوام

So circle that Kaaba, round the Station.

So wander near that sanctuary, circling the shrine,

And drink at Zamzam a draught that quenches burning thirst.

And drink from Zamzam a draft to end all sorrows.

كلّ الصفا منّا خذ وصفه عنّا

كلّ الصفا منّا خذ وصفه عنّا

فالحسن للختام في رضانا كان

فالحسن للختام في رضانا كان

All purity comes from us; take its description from us.

Take from us the utmost purity, and learn from us her traits,

So the beauty of the ending lay in our contentment.

For the finest conclusion was in earning her consent.
