    The letter came to me from you, and within it was

    the unfolding of what my innermost secrets enfold.

    As for separation, it belongs to bodies; there is no

    further parting or estrangement for souls.

    For the spirit is a command, and it is one, like a flash

    that gleamed from sight through a frowning eye.

    ومغيبها عين الحضور لحاضر

    And the unseen is its place of witnessing, and there it is present;

    its absence is presence itself for one who is present.

    The eye of reality, in the metaphor of the unseen,

    beholds you through it if you are absent from my gaze.

    And longing—those of spiritual taste know its nature

    in the union of its witnessing amid outward separation.

    And when hearts gather in the unseen realms,

    separation between bodies does no harm.

    And as bodily separation demands, I have

    a longing that rends my gall with ardent love.

    Passionate longing, torment, and a sigh of anguish,

    and a heart's blaze, then a sleepless one's eye.

    A fire that ardent love kindles—would that it

    were quenched with tears upon a cheek that rains.

    طابت موارد منهلي ومصادري

    I have not forgotten the intimacy of that bond since I first knew it;

    sweet were the ways to my watering place and my ways away.

    والربع روضٌ والصفاء مسامري

    And life was fresh, and happiness my companion;

    the dwelling was a garden, and serenity my companion by night.

    I could not do justice to its pledges, even if I

    spent all my powers of understanding and feeling on it.
