تبدي حسن ذات الشؤونْ

ولم يزل مكنونْ

ولم يزل مكنونْ

The beauty of the Essence with its manifold modes appeared,

Good character manifests

yet has never ceased to be concealed.

And remains hidden

فأمسى كلّ جسمي عيون

فأمسى كلّ جسمي عيون

كقيسها المجنونْ

كقيسها المجنونْ

So my whole body became eyes,

So my whole body became eyes

like her Qays, the madman.

Like Majnun's obsession

وأضحى جمع فرق الوجود

وأضحى جمع فرق الوجود

في غيبه مشهود

في غيبه مشهود

And the unity of divided existence became

And the separation of existence

witnessed in its hiddenness.

Became witnessed in its absence

جمالٌ مطلقٌ في قيود

جمالٌ مطلقٌ في قيود

لم يبدُ للمسجون

لم يبدُ للمسجون

An unbounded beauty in fetters

Absolute beauty bound

has not appeared to the prisoner.

Did not appear to the captive

في شمسٍ بدت في ظلالٍ

في شمسٍ بدت في ظلالٍ

جلّت عن التمثال

جلّت عن التمثال

In a sun that appeared amid shadows,

In a sun that rose in shadows

exalted beyond any likeness,

Transcending idols

تلاشي مذ رآها الهلال

تلاشي مذ رآها الهلال

وصار كالعرجون

وصار كالعرجون

the crescent faded away when it saw her,

Fading since the crescent saw it

and became like a date-palm stalk.

And became like a limping old camel

فلازم صاح خلع العذار

فلازم صاح خلع العذار

ومزّق الأستار

ومزّق الأستار

So persist, friend, in casting off the bridle,

So stay with the passion of shedding excuses

and tear the veils apart.

And tearing down curtains

وفي روض الهوى كن هزار

وفي روض الهوى كن هزار

واترك كلام الدون

واترك كلام الدون

And in love's garden be a nightingale,

And in the meadow of love be jest

and abandon the talk of the base.

And leave the talk of the lowly

وواصل في المسا والصباح

وواصل في المسا والصباح

عرائس الأقداح

عرائس الأقداح

And, evening and morning, keep company with

And continue in the evening and morning

the brides of the goblets:

With the maidens of the cups

سلافاً فضّلتها الصِباح

سلافاً فضّلتها الصِباح

على ابنة الزرجون

على ابنة الزرجون

a choice wine the fair ones preferred

The morning preferred them

to the daughter of the vine.

Over the daughter of Zarjon

وطالع في سطور الوجود

وطالع في سطور الوجود

لتفهّم المقصود

لتفهّم المقصود

And read in the lines of existence,

Read in the lines of existence

to understand the intended meaning.

To understand the purpose

ولا تترك مقام الشهود

ولا تترك مقام الشهود

وكن أخا ذي النون

وكن أخا ذي النون

And do not leave the station of witnessing,

And do not leave the abode of witnessing

and be a brother to Dhu al-Nun.

And be a brother of Noon

وحرّر ثبت محو الرسوم

وحرّر ثبت محو الرسوم

في لوحك المرسوم

في لوحك المرسوم

And inscribe the record of effacing forms

And establish the erasure of forms

on your inscribed tablet,

In your inscribed tablet

لتلقى فيه بحر العلوم

لتلقى فيه بحر العلوم

والجوهر المكنون

والجوهر المكنون

so you may find in it the ocean of knowledge

To find in it the ocean of knowledge

and the hidden jewel.

And the hidden essence

صلاةٌ بالسلام المبين

صلاةٌ بالسلام المبين

لنقطة التعيين

لنقطة التعيين

A blessing with manifest peace

A prayer of clear peace

upon the point of determination—

To the point of determination

نبيٍّ كان منه التكوين

نبيٍّ كان منه التكوين

من عهد كن يكون

من عهد كن يكون

a prophet from whom creation came to be,

A prophet from whom existence originated

since the time of 'Be!'—and it is.
