O Hatimi, O Andalusi, O finest of youths,
O Hatimi, O Andalusian, O best of men
Who shelters the guest in the finest abode.
Who protects the guest in the best abode
ياO خيرbest غياثٍsuccor للهيفfor the distressed قدindeed أتىhas come
يا خير غياثٍ للهيف قد أتى
فيin الحيّthe quarter دخيلٌa stranger seeking refuge يحظىis favored بمرامwith a desired goal
في الحيّ دخيلٌ يحظى بمرام
O best succor for the distressed, there has come
O best savior of the wretch who came
Into the quarter a stranger who attains his wish.
A stranger in the neighborhood, obtaining his wishes
سحبclouds الجدوىof bounty يداكyour two hands قدindeed همتاboth poured down
سحب الجدوى يداك قد همتا
منof كلّevery جميلٍfair gift فيin خاصٍprivate وعامand public
من كلّ جميلٍ في خاصٍ وعام
Your two hands, clouds of bounty, have rained down
Your hands have withdrawn favor
Every fair gift, in private and in public.
From every beauty, in private and public alike
كمhow many مثليlike me عافa seeker of bounty فيamong الورىmankind قدindeed كفتاboth sustained
كم مثلي عاف في الورى قد كفتا
والفضلand bounty جزيلٌabundant إذfor بحركyour sea طامoverflowing
والفضل جزيلٌ إذ بحرك طام
How many seekers like me among mankind have they sustained!
How many like me have your hands spared
And your bounty is abundant, for your sea overflows.
Great is your bounty, your generosity boundless
عبدٌa servant فيat بابthe gate of عزّthe glory of علياكyour exaltedness وقيعlaid low
عبدٌ في باب عزّ علياك وقيع
فيin وصفthe guise of ذليلٍa lowly man يرجوكlooks to you نوالa gift
في وصف ذليلٍ يرجوك نوال
A servant lies low at the gate of your exalted glory,
A servant at your noble door, fallen
In humble guise, hoping for a gift from you.
Describing the lowly, hoping for your grace
فاعطفso show compassion واسمحand be generous بالفضلwith bounty فالجاهfor the standing رفيعlofty
فاعطف واسمح بالفضل فالجاه رفيع
والمجدand glory أثيلٌdeep-rooted والمحتدand lineage عالlofty
والمجد أثيلٌ والمحتد عال
So show compassion and grant your bounty, for your standing is high,
So turn and allow with favor, for glory is lofty
And your glory is deep-rooted, and your lineage lofty.
And honor eternal, ambition is high
والكونand the universe لمّاwhen أمرتyou commanded بالسمعto listen مطيعobedient
والكون لمّا أمرت بالسمع مطيع
والباعand the reach طويلٌlong فيin كلّevery مجالfield
والباع طويلٌ في كلّ مجال
And the universe obeyed when you commanded it to listen,
And the universe obedient when you command obedience
And your reach is long in every field.
The horizon stretches long in every field
عجزfell short المثنيthe praiser وأنتand you فوقabove ماwhat نعتاhe described
عجز المثني وأنت فوق ما نعتا
والقدرand rank جليلٌaugust ياO خيرfinest همامnoble-hearted man
والقدر جليلٌ يا خير همام
The praiser fell short, and you surpass all he described,
My talents fall short, while you are beyond praise
And your rank is august, O finest of noble-hearted men.
Mighty is destiny, O best protector
ياO صاحبkeeper of حانa tavern دورpass around خمرتناour wine
يا صاحب حان دور خمرتنا
كأسa cup الأذكارthe invocations منof صرفunmixed عقارwine
كأس الأذكار من صرف عقار
O keeper of the tavern, pass our wine around:
O owner of the tavern, it's our drink's turn
The cup of invocations, filled with unmixed wine.
The cup of invocations, from the purest wine
ياO مظهرrevealer of حسنthe beauty of مجلىthe manifestation of حضرتناour Presence
يا مظهر حسن مجلى حضرتنا
حيثwhere الأنوارthe lights تبديreveal الأسرارthe mysteries
حيث الأنوار تبدي الأسرار
O revealer of the beauty of our Presence's manifestation,
O manifestation of the beauty of our shining assembly
Where lights reveal the mysteries.
Where the lights display the mysteries
أنتyou الساقيthe cupbearer شرابthe draught of سكرتناour intoxication
أنت الساقي شراب سكرتنا
نعمhow excellent الخمارthe vintner عنregarding كشفlifting خمارa veil
نعم الخمار عن كشف خمار
You are the cupbearer of the draught of our intoxication,
You are the cupbearer of our intoxicating drink
What a fine vintner at lifting a veil!
What excellent wine, unveiling the veil
فيin نفيdenying سواهall other than Him الحقّthe Truth قدindeed ثبتاstands affirmed
في نفي سواه الحقّ قد ثبتا
فيthrough حسنthe excellence of دليلa proof نافيdispelling الأوهامthe illusions
في حسن دليل نافي الأوهام
In denying all other than Him, the Truth stands affirmed,
Affirming the truth, denying all else
Through a fine proof that dispels illusions.
In beautiful proof, dispelling doubts
صفّpurify بالوردwith the litany فيضthe flow of موردناour wellspring
صفّ بالورد فيض موردنا
واطفئand quench للهيبfor the blaze قلبthe heart of الأحبابthe beloved ones
واطفئ للهيب قلب الأحباب
Purify with the litany the flow of our wellspring,
Arrange the roses, pour our stream
And quench the blaze in the hearts of the beloved.
And quench the burning hearts of lovers
واسكبand pour فيinto دنّthe wine-jar of حانthe tavern of مشهدناour witnessing
واسكب في دنّ حان مشهدنا
راحthe wine of التقريبdrawing near منfrom صافيpure شرابa drink
راح التقريب من صافي شراب
And pour into the wine-jar of the tavern of our witnessing
And spill in the bowl of our scene
The wine of nearness, from a pure draught,
The approach of intimacy from the purest wine
كيso that نشهدwe may behold فيin جنانgardens مقعدناour seat
كي نشهد في جنان مقعدنا
بحماin the shelter of مقيلٍa resting place فيin قربكnearness to you سامlofty
بحما مقيلٍ في قربك سام
So that we may behold our seat amid the gardens,
That we may witness in the gardens of our abode
In the shelter of a resting place, lofty in nearness to you.
Sheltered in intimate nearness to you
والنفسand the soul سواكanyone but you فيamong الورىmankind قدindeed أبتاhas refused
والنفس سواك في الورى قد أبتا
منهfrom him التأويلinterpretation أوor نجحthe fulfillment of مرامa desired aim
منه التأويل أو نجح مرام
And the soul has refused anyone but you among mankind,
While the soul refuses in the world
From whom to seek interpretation or attain its desire.
Interpretation of it or success of purpose
فعليكso upon you منfrom الكريمthe Generous One سحبclouds الرضوانdivine favor
فعليك من الكريم سحب الرضوان
ينهلpour down علىupon فسيحspacious ضريحa tomb
ينهل على فسيح ضريح
So upon you, from the Generous One, may clouds of favor
So upon you from the Bountiful be the drawing down
Pour down upon a spacious tomb,
Of bliss upon the spacious shrine
ماas long as لاحshines علىover الأكوانthe worlds بدرthe full moon of العرفانspiritual knowledge
ما لاح على الأكوان بدر العرفان
منwhoever وافقcame upon علىat مثواكyour resting place يليحshines forth
من وافق على مثواك يليح
As long as the full moon of spiritual knowledge shines over the worlds;
What appeared to the cosmos as the full moon of gnosis
Whoever comes upon your resting place shines forth.
Whoever concurs with your tomb thrives
أوor ماas long as سكرتbecame drunk منfrom خمرthe wine of حبكlove for you ندمانdrinking companions
أو ما سكرت من خمر حبك ندمان
والوردand the litany حلاbecame sweet منfrom صرفunmixed مدامwine
والورد حلا من صرف مدام
Or as long as boon companions grow drunk on the wine of love for you,
Or whoever got drunk on the wine of your love regrets
And the litany grows sweet with unmixed wine.
While the roses are sweet from the pure wine
منهfrom it حسنthe goodness of الختامthe ending مذsince قدindeed رأتاshe has seen
منه حسن الختام مذ قد رأتا
هامتshe became enthralled بجميلٍby the beautiful فضلgrace of الإتمامcompletion
هامت بجميلٍ فضل الإتمام
From it comes a blessed ending; since the soul has seen,
From it is the beauty of conclusion, when they saw
It has been enthralled by the beautiful grace of completion.
