O east breeze of the predawn hours, blow

From the hills of those tents,

And spread, from the fragrance of my love,

    What lavender’s fragrance has enfolded.

And chant—rather, sing in this mode.

And give delight, and express the beauty of the melodies.

O you who enrapture the love-bewildered, consumed with passion.

    Perfume my soul, and go

With the scent of blossoms in their calyxes.

And in my wine, as you go,

    Flow mingles with flow.

Alone in ecstasy, I am the imam.

Enter consecration; offer salutations in love’s rapture.

Proclaim love, and say, ‘Peace to whoever has reproached.’

The hour of my wine has grown serene for me,

    And my devising of verse.

And the fair ones, in the morning,

    Lifted the veil from us.

My litany among the roses is where peace is revealed.

My loss is my finding in the state of annihilation.

My wine moistens a cup, flowing from intimacy.

So we grew drunk and were enraptured

From the purity of that wine.

And we were lost to all others,

    Especially those who reproach.

My heart, through love, is consumed with passion.

So rejoice, and drink the pure wine.

To this is ascribed the musk of the ending, and it is perfection.

And upon the cupbearer we bestow continually

    Blessings and peace.

And through him my cup grew clear for me,

So it contained the musk of the ending.

And include noble kin in this grace,

With the companions, as long as the lover is lost in love,

When the cup of wine pours forth at the ending.
