My eyes freely let the tears flow,

Since the gazelle of Hajir’s sands turned away from me.

And noble patience waned within my heart,

When the one who forsakes me grew more unjust.

O master whose beauty holds the hearts of humankind,

Whether a believer in his love or an unbeliever.

And I alone am held captive in his bondage,

And through his beauty he forbids and commands me.

Be generous with union, for I remain in

    Love’s bondage, inwardly or outwardly.

I have remained lovesick for you, mindful of

Keeping the pledges, and I have never been treacherous.

And you promised me a visit before dawn,

While night lets down my curtains for union.

And I am accustomed to your innate faithfulness; yet

Dawn has broken, and you have not returned, O my visitor.
