    وفي مدامة ورد الفتح مرتشفي

    My draught comes from the sea of my praise for the Lord of gifts;

    and I sip the wine of the Litany of Opening.

    And my way to the sanctuary of nearness is sending blessings upon

    the one who returned from the summit of the heights with honor:

    the spring, sweet and pleasant to approach, and the

    mirror of witnessing, and the treasury of bounty, rich in precious gifts.

    صبٌّ قفا نهجه السامي ولم يقف

    May my God bless him, then grant him peace, as long as

    a lover follows his lofty path and does not stop;

    and his family and companions, as long as a lover yearns before dawn

    and rises to chant the litanies with longing,

    and, bowed low, seeks the lofty gate of opening,

    with resolve, expressing a state that shines unconcealed.

    Now, if you seek gardens of roses from the

    litanies, harvesting sweet scent from fragrant pickings,

    then fly to them on the wing of sincerity, riding

    the steed of witnessing with a gaze that never turns aside.

    واشهد حسان التجلّي في عُلَى الغرف

    And enter the gardens of fruit-gathering, and pluck their blossom;

    and behold the beauties of manifestation in the lofty chambers.

    And refresh the spirit amid the basil of its garden,

    and inhale perfume grown fragrant, like flowers in luxuriant bloom.

    And rise before dawn—I would ransom you—where the radiance of

    the secrets lifts the curtains and veils.

    And say: 'My God, my God, You are You, and here

    I am, communing with You; my Master, have mercy on my sorrow.'

    And lose awareness of yourself in Him; leave your own existence, and seek

    clarity in your witnessing, and strip off the adornment of conceit.

    And be glad when manifestation's spring becomes sweet,

    and swim in the pearl-filled sea of encounter, and draw from it.

    And plunge, diving, into the sea of mystery, gathering

    hidden pearls of secrets within shells.

    And run along al-ʿAqīq, turn at the bend and the curving sands of

    Zarūd, Wādī al-Naqā, and begin at a turning.

    And seek Salʿ, and ask about those in its pasture,

    the antelope calves grazing in the spring pasture of the gaze:

    slender beauties from the unseen, unveiled in beauty—O

    God, what a wondrous vision of swaying grace and slenderness!

    For the price of those slender forms' adornments is nothing but

    the surrender of existence in overwhelming ecstasy and passion.

    So rise a little before dawn for a litany whose spring is sweet,

    and, seeker of nearness, follow its Hanafi path.

    And through it approach the influx of aid, which lets us inhale

    roses whose fragrance rises from a fresh, untouched garden.

    ثمّ اقترب يا أخا التقريب واعتكف

    And bow in the mosque of separation, and prostrate yourself there;

    then draw near, O brother of nearness, and remain in devotional retreat.

    واركب نجائب صدق السير لا تقف

    And chant with your whole being, and strive in the night journey before dawn;

    and ride the noble camels of sincere journeying; do not stop.

    Beware of turning back the reins of earnest striving, looking aside,

    with face averted, eclipsed by the sight of other things.

    And I have authorized you; in reciting it, enter

    the garden of gifts, gather the blossoms, and pluck them.

    And through all our litanies enter a sanctuary

    of guidance; touch their corners and circle around them.

    And whoever has a fine litany has an enduring influx

    from his Lord, and escapes the watering place of ruin.

    May you be guided to good, as on the journey there shines for him

    the radiance of a face unveiled by the light of nearness.

    وصفّ أقدامَ وصف الاقتِفا وقف

    So remain thereby at the gates of the Mighty, and stand;

    and align your feet in the manner of following, and stand.

    And raise what bears your name above the pull of governing agents, away from

    the opening of affections; qualify its state and describe it.

    من يتّصف بهما ذا غيرُ منصرف

    And say: effacement and then annihilation are two causes;

    whoever is marked by both is one who does not turn away.

    And I am ʿUmar, the mortal, the poor; and

    among creation, I am called al-Bakrī.

    Now, I ask you for prayers before dawn,

    whose goodness may whiten what has blackened in my pages.

    And I hope for the Generous One's pardon for what

    I have done in negligence and excess.
