In every melody, in the branches he imagines

With the dusky hue of her smiling lips.

With a glance, he exposes the stature of the graceful beloved

تنثني كالمترف الناعم

Her figure shames the stature of the supple bough;

She sways like a gentle branch

She sways like one pampered and delicate.

And her glance is the desire of the passionate lover

ولحظها لذي الهوى مجرود

فاتك كالمرهف الصارم

And her glance is unsheathed against the lover,

So supple, like the firm spear

Deadly as a keen, honed blade.

Whoever has sipped from the cup of love

كلّ من كأس التصابي ذاق

وانتشى من خمرة الحبّ

Everyone who has tasted the cup of youthful dalliance

And delighted in the wine of passion

And grown intoxicated on the wine of love

Is then counted among the lovers,

With loyalty in the book of love

For faithfulness, in the ledger of love.

He learns etiquette and refinement

يحتسي الآداب والأذواق

والصفا في حانة القرب

He drinks in courtesy and spiritual tastes,

And purity in the tavern of nearness

His blossom made pure has withered

His clear water is now sought out;

For the fervent, burning lover

It has grown clear for the enamored, love-bound one.

O beloved of love, climb the mountain peak

في الهوى نحو المنا ناجي

O confidant of love, ascend the Mount;

Toward the beloved, imploring

In love, commune in pursuit of your hopes.

And kindle love's fire from the light

واقتبس نار الهوى من نور

بدر ليل الصبوة الداجي

And draw passion's fire from the light

Of the radiant moon of youth

Of the full moon in youthful longing's dark night.

And listen to the instruments and lute

واسمع الآلات والطنبور

نطقه وانهج بمنهاجي

Speaking to you, follow my path
