إذا منّ من تهوى عليك بنظرةٍ

إذا منّ من تهوى عليك بنظرةٍ

من العين تلقى عندها جنّةَ المأوى

من العين تلقى عندها جنّةَ المأوى

If the one you love favors you with a glance

If one you love glances at you

from the eye, you find there the Garden of Refuge.

With an eye, you then find the abode of paradise

فتمسي قرير العين حيث نعيمُها

فتمسي قرير العين حيث نعيمُها

أماط الجوى من نار قلبك والبلوى

أماط الجوى من نار قلبك والبلوى

So you become content of eye, for its bliss

You become cheerful of eye where its bliss is

has dispelled your heart’s fiery anguish and affliction.

The heavens have unveiled from the fire of your heart and affliction

فكن شارباً صبراً لمرّ صدوده

فكن شارباً صبراً لمرّ صدوده

فذلك مهما مرّ تعقبه الحلوى

فذلك مهما مرّ تعقبه الحلوى

So drink the aloes of patience for the bitterness of his rejection;

So be patiently drinking the bitterness of his aversion

for that, however bitter, is followed by sweetness.

For after all bitterness comes sweetness

وشُرب الحشا من عين سلوانها اجتنب

وشُرب الحشا من عين سلوانها اجتنب

فما ذاق طعم المنِّ مَن همَّ بالسلوى

فما ذاق طعم المنِّ مَن همَّ بالسلوى

And keep the heart from drinking from the spring of its forgetfulness,

And avoid drinking poison from the eye of one who refuses you

for none who thought of forgetting has tasted the flavor of manna.

For one who intends to be consoled will never taste the sweetness of bounty
