From the nightingales’ song and the doves’ lament,

Heartaches were stirred, and passion grew.

Will a slender-figured one grant us union,

Or meet us with a cup of wine?

Bring clear wine in a delicate goblet,

For sweet watering places draw great crowds.

Wherever clouds have lavished rain upon the groves,

Their heavy rain has set the streams flowing.

Rise with us, sober one; let us cast off the bridle.

Be drunk yet sober on the wine-seller’s wine.

And go forth in the morning to the nightingale’s song,

And cast aside the reproachers, those petty folk of blame.

With aged wine, the veil is lifted,

And pure wine draws one close to music.

So quaff, my companion, cup after cup,

And repeat, and keep the wine flowing.

Nowhere but with me will you find pure wine.

He triumphs who arrives with the sash-adorned one.

What the lover al-Yafi hopes for is pardon,

As he has come hoping for the best of endings.
