The letter from you, O Ali,

arrived like a garden drawing near.

    And from its contents wafted

the fragrant breath of incense wood.

From it I breathed the sweetness of the character

    of the first Beloved.

And I tasted its meaning, which,

together with its wording, was sweet to me.

    As for what you mentioned

about a father who has departed

to God's mercy and the good pleasure

    of the Beginningless, the Eternal:

you had already known, before this,

    the judgment of heaven-sent destiny.

And all of us, likewise, will be dead

when the appointed term runs out.

For this we were created, and through

this gate the entrance was sealed.

    لمثل ذا فليعمل

    Rise, awaken, and work for Him;

for the like of this let one work.

    Rouse the heart and journey

in His path; do not be heedless.

And die that you may live, before

you die the death of one carried away.

    Life is nothing but death

in obedience to the manifest Lord.

    إلى حماه تدخل

    So leave, for Him, all besides Him;

    you will enter His sanctuary.

Gird up your resolve and journey

to draw near a lofty gate.

And cast off love's bridle, and

speak in ecstasy; heed not the loveless.

And drink the wine of the litany, where

the cup is unveiled, brimming full.

    لا تستمع للعذَّل

    And speak in ecstasy and carouse, lost in love;

do not listen to the reproachers,

until the heights call out to you

    in their loftiness: O Ali,

you have attained the utmost of your wishes,

and been granted all you hoped for.
